Don't go and eat here in a group! Among friends who all live around Leuven, we wanted to give Bar Louis a try to see if it wasn't a tourist trap.
When the menus were handed out, we were suddenly told that a maximum of 3 different dishes could be chosen. Because one person with specific allergies and tolerances could only eat one particular dish, the other 9 people therefore had to choose from a maximum of 2 dishes.
We asked several times if there could not be some flexibility in this and a certain dish could be excluded, but the reply was clear, I accept a maximum of 3 different dishes.
The funny thing is also that this only applies from 6p on, so the 2 tables of 5p around us could take 10 different dishes. The 10 of us maxed out at 3. Look for the logic. Anyway I understand that it is not possible to serve 10 different dishes at the same time but limiting an entire group to 3 dishes is also ridiculous. Then limit it to 5 or exclude some easy dishes.
5 people of the group ended up having the filet pur of euro 41. This was a piece of meat with a pre-prepared bowl with some salad and one slice of tomato. For a total of €41 per piece... Similar to a steak on the traditional "eetdag" at the "parochiezaal". But 3 times as expensive.
Price-quality wise 10 dozens of places are better in Leuven.
Many of the group had also taken beer, half the bottles were expired but still served to us ...
Finally, we sat close to the kitchen and some fruit flies flew around our table all evening. Nice and cosy.
Anyways for our group it was confirmed. Bar Louis is an overpriced inflexible tourist trap to be avoided in Leuven. They won't...
Read moreRuctions over a cup of water at Bar Louis! I was there with my family, hoping for good food and service, after reading some decent reviews. As we were eating (our bill came to over 90 euro) I asked for a cup of hot water for my wife who had a cold coming on and the evening was a little chilly. To my disbelief the waiter said they would charge us the price of a bottle of mineral water for the cup of hot water. Thinking he was joking I started to laugh but then realized he was in earnest. I asked to speak with the manager and that’s when things really got interesting. The elderly lady was immediately rude in front of my children, saying “what is your problem” and “we don’t like to give anything for free in Belgium,” as if asking for a cup of hot water was some form of attempted theft. (Not to mention a nearby cafe we had been at that afternoon cheerfully provided hot water at no cost). The dowager’s response was almost comedic except for the fact that her aggressive manner left my young children rather shaken. Overall, the food was ok and the wait staff were generally polite but being denounced for asking for a cup of hot water left us feeling unwelcome and was the only blight on our otherwise thoroughly enjoyable...
Read moreMany times had experienced arrongant behaviour from the owner/manager of this place but today it topped. They basically kicked me out after 45 min at the table (i was alone) had ordered, after my meal, coffee and dessert. The coffee arrived, the dessert after 20 minutes not, so I was ready to leave but still asked the waiter who told me it was forgotten and within 5 min she brought it. So I had spent 20 min. waiting for the desert. When the dessert arrived the manager came over with in very unpolite way telling me that I had to leave the table in 10 min.... making all the tables around me looking at me weirdly... Of course I left without having the dessert, they did not even bother not to charge it and still know that if I were not alone there but escorted by a man they would had had respect towards him. This about how we deal with solo women travelling alone in many places.... They even deared to say thay I was looking at my mobile and was not eating the desert on the moment it arrived... Very good food for brasserie standards and warm atmosphere but many times have faced this arrogance that is enough now. I know they will reply whatever.... it is turned back. A woman travelling without her partner...
