De Nachtuil — Restaurant in Leuven

Worst experience ever

I went to this restaurant to have dinner in a big group of people. We were sitting right behind the window and my jacket got burnt due to a small candle nobody of us saw before. The candle was placed right behind me. We unfortunately left all our belongings (jackets and bags) in there since the staff did not inform us there was a hanger in the restaurant.

I expected their insurance company to cover costs of this incident (as it is the usual case), not only in terms of my burnt jacket, but also the medical costs we had to cope with after suffering serious burns in our hands and arm when trying to smothering the fire ourselves. After writing an e-mail to the restaurant, they let me know they would contact the insurance company to compensate us as soon as possible. More than 3 months later, the insurance company claimed the candle was "visible to our eyes", so they took no responsibility. I found this completely unacceptable, as we obviously could not see the candle and prevent the incident to happen. Seeing this situation, I asked the manager if something could be done from their side.

Had I been the manager of the restaurant, I would have taken action myself and payed for all the damages and inconveniences caused to the clients (us). But no, they completely disregarded this and just mentioned they did not feel responsible of what happened.

I was not expecting such a great experience here. My husband and I are on vacation and were looking for some local food. We asked for a suggestion from the owner of a beer store and he suggested De Nachtuil. We weren't so sure when we looked at it from the outside but we are happy we didn't let the appearance deter us! It was empty to begin with and looked old but...The service was outstanding and the food delicious, every bite was a pleasure. We got the beef stew and the fish stew and we couldn't be happier. The fries were a sinful deliciousness! They have quite a large selection of Belgian beers but also some cocktails, wines, and liquors. A lovely time with excellent food. I partook in a three course meal, all of which were fantastic. The croquette selection offered a wide variety, but I chose the smoked salmon and ham. These two warm delicacies were gone as quickly as they had come. The main course was a rabbit, which i had never tried before. It tastes like chicken. The salad was a nice addition as well. The dessert was spectacular, the dame blanche was some of the best ice cream i have had in Belgium. Overall, a wonderful experience with great food and...
