masu — Restaurant in Mons

So this is not a restaurant to be put in a specific category and for this reason it unfortunately scares some people. Instead MASU is an amazing exploration into taste and flavors. Named after partners Max and Sullivan the small establishment was noticed by the Michelin guy who gave them a Bib gourmand rating and they more than deserve it. For a reasonable price you yet a choice of a started a main dish and a desert, with only 3 choices for each. This enables our two magicians to concentrate on execution and it is flawless. The two partners get their creativity from exploration of virtually all cuisines and visit great restaurants everywhere to get their inspirations. It is amazing to find such a place in Mons, but then only two local guys could execute this with such generosity and informality. Note that they are also Music enthusiasts and have a mixing table in the kitchen (yes have a look and ask them about it). Nous sommes venus manger hier soir avec mon compagnon. Au niveau de la qualité dans l’assiette, nous n’avons pas été déçus. Tout n’était pas forcément à notre goût, mais la cuisine était objectivement bien exécutée. Le houmous vraiment délicieux, on a aussi adoré le premier plat avec l’aubergine, et le dessert avec le biscuit qui était excellent. J’avais aussi spécifié que je n’aimais pas la coriandre et cela a été respecté :)

Par contre, niveau ambiance et service, on a trouvé que ça manquait de qualité pour un restaurant de ce genre (180€ pour deux personnes). Les tables sont vraiment très simples au niveau du dressage (aucune décoration, nappe, bougie,..), on a eu de la musique (son++) style rap dans les oreilles toute la soirée et on a pas trop compris le lien avec l’identité du restaurant. Pareil pour le service à table, qui était un timide à notre goût et pas forcément digne de l’expérience.
