Hinterland — Restaurant in Saint-Gilles - Sint-Gillis

The food was really good in general. The only thing I would personally change was the granola in the açai bowl. There was some types of dried fruit or berry which was too hard and chewy and was sticking in the teeth all the time. We also got some issues with the service. We arrived and inside everything was full, so we said we would have waited. Then when a table was free we were just about to sit when they asked to wait for a couple from another table to leave. Te table we were about to sit was for 5 and we were three, so we have been asked to wait, even though we arrived before. Ok, fine, I understand the “need” even though I don’t appreciate. Then we ordered a latte with coconut milk because my friend is lactose intolerant and they brought us a normal one. Also this is acceptable, mistakes can be done. The waitress said that we could keep that for free and she would make another one and in the end I just noticed that they let us pay also the latte that was made by mistake. Plus we also had some issues during payment where the cashier did some kind of mistake and we had to wait for 10 minutes at the cash to let us pay… there is something to...

Hinterland is a nice, bright looking cafe with a good selection of food and drinks. I spend my afternoon working here. And although I have a general good experience there where definitely some points to improve on. After having lunch, the staff walked by the tables multiple times without picking up empty plates. It was there for 25 minutes and longer at my neighbours, when I wanted to ask for staff to maybe take it away there seemed to be no-one around (maybe they were in the kitchen or taking a break). The staff was not going around asking people if they could be of help and after waiting a couple of minutes at the bar I was noticed and ordered another cappuccino. Although the latte art was good, the milk was steamed up to hot making it undrinkable the first 5 minutes and losing the taste. Stopped by Friday, first time since the pandemic began - and was disappointed to see the staff is unfriendly and rude as before (is it just the owner's rule to not care about service?)... Orders are taken at the counter, and when they bring drinks and food at the table, no 'please' no 'enjoy', they just put your plate on the table with a bang and shuffle away without eye contact. This was past 2pm so it certainly wasn't super busy but the staff really don't like customer contact I gather! Another thing which disturbed me: in this time of covid, they don't wipe the tables and the 2 girls at the counter had their masks down on their chin while making the drinks... Finally: I sat on the bench next to the wall, and it smells like sewers and several fruit flies were constantly trying to share my meal - so maybe issues with the building itself and/or general cleanliness?
