Le Prétexte — Restaurant in Saint-Gilles - Sint-Gillis

I gave it 4 stars. It has a nice, quaint ambiance to it, and I guess if you just want to hang out with friends and have a few drinks it would be superb for that. But I went there for food. And my food was overwhelmingly... Average. I specifically ordered the Carbonnade Flamande to try it in it's homeland, since I've only ever had it when I made it from a recipe I got from YouTube, and I was greatly disappointed at what I was served. I got chunks of beef in gravy. (Edited and added a star because it seems what I was served is typical, and the recipe I used has been "kicked up a few notches" so I was expecting more than I should have and adjusted everything up one star from my initial review in response for that)

I would have given them 3 stars for that, but the potato croquettes served with it were so good it earned them an third star. Service was friendly (even though we barely know a dozen words in French), but then their menu is in English too so... My husband and I are American, and this is the first place we went for a late lunch/early dinner after arriving to our hotel. It was phenomenal! We each ordered a hearty lamb dish that came with mashed potatoes/potato croquettes and a glass of house wine. It was our most memorable meal here in Brussels, and the portions were quite large. It was only 40€ total for both of us, so also the most inexpensive meal for the quantity and quality! The staff barely spoke English, and yet they were some of the friendliest and most welcoming locals we encountered...

First i will like to say thanks, to the chefs due them attention. Me and my girlfriend we had a city break to Brussel, and i will like to share our super experience with you guys. We highly recommend this place, for them customer service, personally and family welcome. We work in hospitality for ears in London.
