Bar Popeye — Restaurant in Região Geográfica Imediata do Rio de Janeiro

This is not a gay bar, in fact they were fined in 2023 for treating a gay couple homophobically (if you speak Portuguese you can Google it, was in all the media). It's just a local, popular, low profile bar in Ipanema that happens to be right in the main street leading to the gay beach on Ipanema. It has a bit of a sports bar profile, also live music sometimes. Gay guys stop here for a beer when they return from the beach, so around 5/6pm and maybe a couple of hours forward. I'm not sure this place even needs reviews, it's a very normal local bar, right in the middle of gay Ipanema. If you're looking for a gay bar, this may not be it. But hey, if you want to stop for a beer coming back from the beach like dozens of gay guys keep doing, why not. There was nothing wrong with the service or the crowd the few times I stopped by. Some reviews here seem very politicised to me, negativity from lgbt crowd (maybe) after the homophobic incident and exaggerated praise from (straight?) supporters. As already stated, it's really not that different from thousands of other bars in Brazil or anywhere...

A decent gay bar with great food and drinks. Not gay but I do enjoy going here with my wife and eating the petiscos which are really damn good!

Torresmo is bomb here. Drinks are tasty. Beer is cold...even has live music.
