Came here on a Friday afternoon with my husband after going to the Tuol Sleng S21 for lunch. I really wanted something healthy for my husband and I. Im vegetarian and my husband eats meet. Im glad I didnt come here for dinner. Lunch was fine but I wouldnt recommend it for dinner unless you were looking for something light. The greenery in front of the restaurant made it really hard to find.
Pros: The food tasted great and the portions were reasonable for the price. The pumpkin soup was to die for! the coffee and juices were really nice.
Cons: I said to my husband that there was a fly near his sandwich while we were sharing our pumpkin soup. When he tried to swat it away we realized it stayed and then crawled off the plate. It ran under the table and later back on the table. It was a small cockroach! My husband thinks that sometimes this happens but for a nice “clean” restaurant like this it wasnt a problem. It still made me feel uncomfortable sitting there and eating the rest of the meal.
I ordered a bowl, and it tasted great but if was filled to the top that made it difficult to eat so I put it on the plate instead. I realized that the bowl was only full because 80% was just salad. Wasnt pleased for the cost of the bowl I got only a little bit of lentils, brown rice,...

They said they run out of buns for the vegan burger so I got the bowl. It was dry, tasteless and the ingredients seemed and tasted old. It consisted mainly of lettuce.
Finally, I was surprised to see bacon on the menu of a restaurant that promotes itself as healthy and respectful of Mother Nature, even if under a “flexitarian” label. Bacon isn’t just the product of a particularly cruel industry—it’s also officially classified by the World Health Organization as a Group 1 carcinogen, in the same category as tobacco and asbestos (meaning there is strong evidence it causes cancer, particularly colorectal cancer).
While “flexitarian” technically leaves space for animal products, serving bacon feels at odds with the restaurant’s values of health and sustainability. With so many excellent plant-based alternatives available, it would be great to see more alignment between the concept and what’s offered on the menu.

Be warned, Backyard Cafe on St. 246 is a HIDDEN gem. Sometimes the Google Map location is simply a suggestion...so I was not surprised when the tuk tuk driver dropped me off on a quiet street with no cafe in sight. Clue— Look for an oasis of greenery on the south side of the street. Peek inside; you will see the signage over the cafe door.
There is a lovely outside dining area as well as a cooler inside area. The decor is peaceful and clean.
Lots of tasty healthy options. I opted for the Backyard Combo: Healthy Omelette watermelon juice, and cappuccino. Tasty and hearty. I especially enjoyed the toast. And they have weighty cutlery! I love eating with a solid fork.
If you are looking for raw, vegan options and/or gluten free options, this is a great resource for you.
The coolers reveal additional wonders. Yummy takeaway and take home items.
There is a feel about this place— a peaceful hidden oasis where one can quietly watch the world go by. While it was a good meal, it is the opportunity to contemplate life and people-watch unnoticed that will bring me back...
