The Silver Pagoda, located within the Royal Palace complex in Phnom Penh, is one of the most stunning and culturally significant sites in Cambodia. I recently had the opportunity to visit this magnificent temple and it left a lasting impression. The Silver Pagoda, also known as Wat Preah Keo, is a serene and beautifully maintained site. The atmosphere is one of quiet reverence and beauty, with the temple's architecture and surroundings offering a peaceful retreat from the city's hustle and bustle. The meticulously manicured gardens and the reflective quality of the structures create a tranquil environment that is both awe-inspiring and meditative. The temple is renowned for its exquisite architecture and the wealth of treasures it houses. The floor of the Silver Pagoda is inlaid with over 5,000 silver tiles, giving it its name. The central staircase, made of Italian marble, leads up to the main vihara (sanctuary), which houses a life-sized gold Buddha adorned with 9,584 diamonds. Another highlight is the Emerald Buddha, carved from baccarat crystal. Inside the pagoda, the walls are adorned with elaborate murals depicting scenes from the Reamker, the Khmer version of the Ramayana. These murals, along with various other artifacts, showcase the rich cultural heritage and artistic craftsmanship of Cambodia. Walking through the Silver Pagoda, I was struck by the sense of history and spirituality that pervades the site. The combination of the sparkling silver tiles underfoot, the golden Buddha, and the intricate murals created a truly mesmerizing experience. The temple's quiet atmosphere allowed for moments of reflection and appreciation of the artistic and historical significance of the site. Tips for Visitors: - **Dress Code: Visitors should dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, out of respect for the sacred nature of the temple. - **Guides: Hiring a local guide can greatly enhance the experience, as they provide valuable insights into the history and significance of the various artifacts and architectural elements. - **Timing: It's best to visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the midday heat and crowds. The Silver Pagoda is a must-visit for anyone traveling to Phnom Penh. Its architectural beauty, historical significance, and serene atmosphere make it one of the city's most treasured landmarks. Whether you're interested in history, art, or spirituality, the Silver Pagoda offers a rich and rewarding experience.

The Silver Pagoda is located in the Royal Palace of Cambodia. Wat Preah Morakat, also known as the Silver Pagoda or the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, is a famous temple in Cambodia. It is called the Silver Pagoda because the temple has 5,329 silver tiles on the floor, each silver tile is handmade and weighs 1.125 grams. The temple has a cultural function and preserves religious treasures rather than a worship function, containing more than 1,650 valuable objects. The Buddha statue sitting on the central tower of the temple is an emerald statue, with different information that the statue is made of emerald or crystal. Standing in front of the emerald statue is a statue of Maitreya Buddha (the future Buddha) cast in 90 kg of pure gold and set with 2,086 diamonds, including a 25 carat diamond on the crown and a 20 carat diamond on the chest. There is also a Buddha relic statue sitting in a small gold and silver stupa, treasures of Queen Kossomak Nearirith, and contributions from noble and royal families.

Tourist trap? It's part of the palace visit. There are other very beautiful and much more quiet temples throughout the city you can visit for free or a small fee. $10 seems very pricey for an entrance ticket. Also covering your shoulders is insufficient, you need to wear a shirt or similar, otherwise your obliged to buy a T-shirt provided at the entrance. Elbows and knees don't need to be covered but dress appropriately. At the time we went we could see The Throne room, dancing hall and Silver Pagoda. Sadly enough we missed the dancing hall because they decided to close down 30minutes before actual closing time. The spiritual building next to the Silver Pagoda, totally grey is very finely decorated and could be mistaken for it but the actual Silver Pagoda seems mostly an important spiritual place rather than that it is beautiful or particular to look at. There is also no 'silver' to be found. Once there were some metal tiles on the floor that gave it a 'silver' shine on the inside, hence the name. No pictures from the inside because not allowed. I would suggest to not bother visiting it. (Picture is not the Silver Pagoda but building next to it)

19 January 2023: The silver pagoda is part of the Royal Palace complex. The entry fee was $10 per person I'm so glad that I read other reviews about wearing respectful clothes as we saw several people turned away. Make sure you cover your shoulders and knees. Don't forget your face mask otherwise you'll have to buy one from a street vendor outside for 1000khr. When we eventually found the entrance (a 2 minute walk from the main gate, going left as you look at it) we decided to hire a guide, Monica, for $10. Excellent decision as there isn't much literature to read going round and so I'm not sure how much we'd have learnt by ourselves. I spotted a few people on their phones so there may be an app to download, could be worth checking? The tour with our guide lasted about an hour and we didn't feel rushed. Monica highlighted the best bits and explained things very clearly. All in all a super visit
