We saw this place while walking through Banff downtown on Friday night and decided to give it a shot. The place from inside feels warm and cozy, TV's all around the dining and bar area. The patio had nice clear views of three sisters mountain in Canmore.
Service: The Aussie server we had was good. I felt the service was quite a bit slow during our visit despite of less customers (around 12) in the restaurant.
Food: Bad : We ordered the three cheese garlic flatbread, which was not even close to a normal flatbread. I don't know if it was made in house, but almost felt like it was frozen and heated after the order was placed. There was no seasoning at all, by the time we received it in on our table, it was almost close to a cold flatbread. The marinara sauce was blend, lack of seasoning, didn't go very well the flatbread. So we asked the server to give us like a bbq sauce and ranch but he took like 10 mins and we were almost in the last slice of the flatbread🤣. There were only like 12 customers in the entire restaurant, not sure why it took that long to just bring two small cups with sauce.
Good: The apple crumble dessert was a bang on, had a very nice balance of textures, taste between warm apple, vanilla ice-cream and caramel sauce. They were not under or over-sweet. The caramel sauce can over power lighter fruit desserts but not in this case. Again, not sure if it was made in house or bought but I'd highly recommend to order that dessert.
Hot Chocolate drink was very good as well, not very thick in texture or over-sweet but had a nice warm touch to it.
Drinks: Bad: Ordered a Long Island and when we asked about the ingredients, he said they just use pre-mix and pour Pepsi to make it. I'm shaking my head thinking how on the world can you use pre-mix instead of making it fresh. All it tasted was just pure Pepsi with ton of ice cubes and not even 1% close to a Long Island drink😆
Here's the general Long Island recipe for your bartender: Shot of vodka, tequila, light rum, triple sec, gin and a splash of soda (cola or Pepsi).
I'd highly recommend the management to look into the quality of the food and beverages. We don't have any issues with the pricing as banff is an expensive tourist town but you will need to be consistent with your food quality and unfortunately, this place was a total...
Read moreHad late night takeout cravings on a Tuesday night. Called the Spice Hut first, they didn't even pick up. Then called the Drake Pub, buddy on the phone put me on hold for the next 10 mins, clearly having forgotten about there being a customer on the phone. Then called Murrieta Bar&Grill who flat out told me they only do like 3 things on their takeout menu, like flatbread or something equally unappetizing. Okay then. Almost lost hope by this point, I randomly picked the next restaurant on google map's list of "still open" and called the Wood, not expecting much at this point (it was pretty close to closing time). The girl picked up right away, sounded super cheerful. Thing were looking up. So I, again on a whim, ordered something I had only glanced at a moment earlier on their menu, a watermelon salad. Went to pick it up. The girl met me at the door. "Here for the take out?" Yes please "Oh and it's 30% off after 9pm" Bonus! Went back home to eat said salad. First bite and I was like, this is in the top 3 best salads I've had in my life. Props to the kitchen. No really, what a product for a weeknight, close to closing takeout order. Back to the review of the experience then. 5/5 service from Jade G, this was a takeout order and both on the phone and in person she was pretty awesome. 6/5 food, this salad should get a Michelin star. It was so good that I almost forgot that I also ordered a steak sandwich, which was also good, but not "Tuesday night takeout watermelon salad blows your mind" good. All in all a superb experience,...
Read moreYesterday afternoon, I joined a group on the patio of The Wood. We were travelling in Canmore as part of a wedding. We started the afternoon with a lovely Australian server who I believe was named Carrie. She was attentive, sweet and super accommodating to the fact that we had more people showing up to join. Eventually, the group grew to about 20 people. The start of our experience was incredible. Carrie ensured all waters were full and all the tables were clean and taken care of. The food was great - no complaints there.
The group I was with outstayed Carrie’s shift and that’s where our experience took a turn. Our group was ignored and it took nearly 30 minutes to get a drink once the afternoon became the evening. We were stacking dishes because the new server didn’t remove anything from the tables. It got bad enough that we the patrons had to clear food plates to another table after more than an hour of them staying on the table.
We are a group of current and retired hospitality staff so this was very disappointing to witness and be part of. We even were told to put things back on the table when asked to remove them. At one point, our new server came out and apologized that she hadn’t been around. The fact that she was aware that she was neglecting us was unexpected.
Our bride and groom were let down by the experience as a whole and that was a bad memory for us as a group.
Overall, we had a nice experience but the second server could learn a lot...
