My wife and I came decided to come in for a "quick" bite before our movie. We arrived around on a Thursday night just before 6, plenty of time we thought before our 7pm show. There were about a dozen people already in the place, which was a good sign. Our server was friendly and showed us to our table. He was the only front of house staff so was pretty busy running between tables. The restaurant is a bit of hole in the wall/university pub feel and pretty dark and brown - definitely hasn't been updated in a long time.
It took us about 10 minutes for the server to come around and get our orders. A couple of things that jump off the menu right away. Firstly, prices are high - burgers are $25-$27 with a specialty burger for $73 and another for $45! Looking at menu pics from other reviewers it seems prices go up every 6 months or so. Sandwich and appy prices seem a bit high as well. The milkshakes seemed like a good deal at about $5.50 but I didn't see anyone drinking them. Second, for a small restaurant there is a lot of stuff on the menu. I would be concerned about the freshness of product or ability of kitchen to produce all the variety of food (see comments below). We got the chicken cordon bleu and the swiss/mozzarella/pickle burgers.
We waited for quite a while for our food and I noticed other tables before us were doing same. We finally got our food 35 minutes after ordering. The servings looked good, produce was fresh and crisp, and the potato wedges seemed hot and crisp. The burgers were pretty big but are served on small plates so look much larger. The beef patty was not seasoned and had a bit of "off" taste (something a few other reviewers have also commented on). The bun was simply cut in half and was cold and dry. As a result, each bite tasted funny with crumbling bun, fresh produce, off beef. It would have been better to at least toast the bun or better yet to grill it on the flattop with some butter to soften it up and add flavor. The wedges were not seasoned either. The chicken burger was good. Finally, the pop was flat, they needed to change their CO2 tank.
We woofed down a few bites and asked for takeout containers for the rest as we needed to rush to our movie. I asked if they were usually this busy and the server apologized for the wait and noted that there was only 1 cook.
Unfortunately, we won't be returning. There are other places that do a better job with burgers and a better price point and faster service. This place has been around for decades so it's nice to see a local businesses doing OK (I remember coming here about 15 years ago with our son and the food...
Read moreThis place is really not worth it and I don’t get the good reviews on here. The burgers are are mediocre at best, and incredibly overpriced. The place looks like a hoarders dump both inside and out; Everything’s worn and dirty and cluttered. The inside smells like rancid oil. We opted for the patio. The kids meal fish & chips at $15.50 is fine, but also kinda pricey (kids meals at other places seem to range $10-12). Maybe it’s the potato wedges that are homemade vs the machine cut fries? Because those were nice. We ordered a “Hulk” burger to share and it’s basically just their “the works” but with an extra patty. So they basically charge an extra $5 for 1 patty and it’s not even top quality meat. I think $30 might be the most I’ve ever spent on a burger and at that price it should blow me away. Not quality ingredients, not even a fancier quality bun or better cheese. I’d pay $15 most for a burger like that. Might as well go to a fast-food joint and pay $9. On top of all of this, the server took forever to take our order, and she was snappy and whiney. She kept blaming the wait on them being understaffed (but like, not in a polite “sorry we are understaffed today” but rather in an angry-I’m-the-victim “I’m the only one here today!”). Then even when she tried to be nice it was with a bitter undercurrent, like when we were about to leave and she said “Enjoy the nice sunny weather for the rest of us that have to be stuck inside!”. I’m sure it was meant well and just came out the wrong way, just still a little off-putting. I used to work in a callcenter when I was in my 20’s, and sometimes I was “stuck inside” working on a sunny weekend too, but I’d never whine about it to my customers. Here’s what was good: The potato wedges were tasty. Seemed like they were made in-house. They did split the large burger in 2 and served on two separate plates - that was actually good service. I still don’t think these burgers deserve these price points. Would...
Read moreHonestly it's a no for me. They were friendly enough but the place looks poorly maintained but that might just be them aiming for a certain aesthetic (think run down 70's redneck burger joint) there's just a lot going on everywhere you look and nothing has seen paint probably since it opened.
Then there's the food, first of all it's expensive, but it's New West and inflation so I didn't initially have an issue with that, but then I got my food.
The bun was not good, just a bad texture, reminded me of buns you'd get when your parents took you camping, but denser and less flavour.
The patty was really loose and flavourless, I wanted the teriyaki mushroom burger but they were out of teriyaki so they suggested BBQ sauce instead, I said sure but was pretty disappointed, especially since based on the quality of the food that is just bottled teriyaki sauce from the store so it's just bad kitchen management that they were out. Also BBQ sauce was a bad suggestion on their part, it just downed out what little flavor was actually there.
"House greens" is a salad, idk I thought it was like broccoli and veggies and stuff but no, that's partly on me for assuming but also on them for not saying what such a generic term means in the menu.
I got a Nutella shake, don't recommend, the Nutella forms globs in it that block the straw, it's like it's not blended enough or something but also idk how well Nutella blends in a milkshake but that's not my problem I'm not the one making it, if it didn't work when they came up with it then it shouldn't be on the menu.
All in all it seemed very home made and at $22 for just the burger plus tax and tip it better not taste like my dad made it (my dad is not a chef) "tastes like homemade" is not a compliment people!
It's 3 stars because it's not like it was "bad" I didn't get food poisoning, it isn't the worst food I've ever had, but it's no Bin4. Honestly it's just not worth the...
