MUST CHECK YOUR PRICES BEFORE BUYING. I was in disbelief after shopping in-person for the first time in a long time, due to COVID. I bought nutritional yeast for the first time in a while and it seemed much more expensive than I remembered. I double checked the price: $44.87/kg (kg's are not my thing for food so that's $20.35/lbs...and see below for the updated and even further inflated price!). That seemed crazy but I couldn't recall the previous prices I paid so bought it anyway. Both Fortino's and Goodness Me now sell for $9.99/Lbs...in other words, less than half. On a positive note, the staff were very helpful and even confirmed that the price was correct and had been increased. On another positive note, the description on the website indicated that the B12 it contained was produced by natural fermentation, which is excellent and the more desirable form. Nothing said about the other vitamins so I'm guessing they are added (therefore it is likely partially fortified). I will check with Goodness Me (Natural/Organic food store) and if the same or better (ie. Non-fortified/no synthetic additives or vitamins) then I am decreasing this review to 3 stars due to the (much higher) price. BUT, if their nutritional yeast is fortified ie. added synthetic vitamins/B12 then I may increase to 5 stars as that would mean Bulk Barn nutritional yeast is superior. Stay tuned...
So just checked with Goodness Me and their nutritional yeast ($9.99/lbs vs $20.35/lbs at Bulk Barn.) is "an active yeast" which is NOT fortified at all. Apparently, this contains less B-vitamins BUT it is more bioavailable to those with absorption problems. So I guess it depends what you want: if you want higher B vitamins without taking pills get fortified; if absorption problems, definitely get non-fortified. Either way, Bulk Barn nutritional yeast is much too expensive and I won't be purchasing it there any longer.
One last update, they upped their price to 6.51/100g. They must think people can't do math because that works out to $29.55 per lbs! Absolutely deplorable, if that's not COVID gouging I don't know what is; tripled the price in 2-3 years. First off, I won't be shopping at BULK BARN for anything anymore; second, I decreased my review to 1 star because they're a greedy company; and last point: NUTRITIONAL YEAST ISN'T HEALTHY AT ALL AND TURNS OUT IS ACTUALLY PROBABLY BAD FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE!!! I do want to thank BB for jacking up the price, which prompted me to investigate whether or not I really needed it. Turns out it's not at all vegan, barely vegetarian, highly processed, and prone to causing numerous side effects. Anyway, you can read more about it online. But I recommend boycotting any greedy company, and their products, that inexplicably become exorbitantly expensive overnight. They are trying to profit off of so called "supply chain shortages", which are just an excuse to gouge customers. JUST SAY NO THANK YOU, and spend your money somewhere, or on...
Read moreEvery visit to this location is a pleasant one, enjoyable actually-which I rarely can say about the other locations more local to me. I actually go out of my way sometimes 30 minutes to visit this exact location. The staff are helpful, engaged and patient. Which is super important because I take my time and always ask a ton of questions, and nit pick every transaction. They did not act irritated one bit- they also didn't give the cold shoulder or rush me out after closing 10 min prior. 10/10 service from the staff. Things wete also STOCKED and clean. One complaint, not this particular location, but the last 3 locations have not had amber honey able to pour out. It seems like a machine issue or texture issue. The little bit I can manage to get, turned into a glue like substance once it cools, making it near impossible to spread or scoop. It may be a corporate upgrade that's needed for dispensing the honey....I will 100% be returning, likely only to...
Read moreWhen you enter, there's no white tabs to write your code number on. There are no pencils there also they're at the second last aisle both the pencils and the tabs and when I asked now I have to go back to the beginning and start all over again. The man said we're trying to discourage writing tabs on your purchases. So that means you have to trust them to bring in the right thing because as you watch them you can see if they made a mistake which he did twice. If I hadn't have found tabs and written them all up for an accessible person coming in at the front and then having to go to the other side of the store just to get a tab and a pencil is very inconvenient and the two gentlemen at the front could have cared less. All they would do was standing up there and singing songs to the tunes...
