BIG John's Pizza and Donair — Restaurant in Calgary

I went into Big John's yesterday Dec 23 2016. I'm currently working on a jobsite that is next door to it, so I passed it many times. Yesterday I finally decided I would check it out because I love donairs.

For the quality of business, I would have given a 5 star review! I purchased a super donair and it was probably the best tasting donair I've ever eaten! The service was also great. There was an older oriental couple. Not sure if they own the place but they were very friendly and I have no complaints regarding the taste nor the service.

However, the reason I'm voting 2 stars is because I fell very ill last night. I can also %100 be sure that is was from Big Johns because I didn't eat anything else last night after consuming the donair. I was up all night puking with constant diarrhea. This morning I'm feeling almost completely better so I'm pretty sure it was food poisoning.

As far as other reviews go on here, they seem to be a very well established business. From the looks of it, I'm also the only person that's had this issue. So it might be a very rare isolated occurrence, maybe even the first one. Just posting this review because I care. Eat where you will, with your own...

They closed for renovations, now new ownership with HUGE price increases. Increased prices so public pays for renovations. Sorry no longer a regular customer there!

07/06/2023 - Just went back this month as they posted a special for 25% off. Donair was smaller, meat was dry, lacking sauce, tasted like they added pizza sauce on to it. Awful! Since this business is off the main drag I cannot see them lasting! They have alienated too many regular customers! Can't wait now for them to fold their doors to make way for something new! It is a shame that our local Donaire place has gone to this!!! By the way, don't have your staff say that Donairs used to $8 something. I was a regular and always paid $7.88!!!! Now to pay for your renovations we have to pay over $9.00 for a lousy Donaire. Goodbye to this establishment and will spread my review to all the people I know in the neighborhood. Look, I'm not a fancy man, I don't need much in my life, I just need good pizza for a good price, today I go in, I ask for the lone slice of Hawaiian left in the little heater rack, the man behind the counter (presumably BIG John, but who can say) says to me "are you sure, this pepperoni is very fresh" this man, this incredible man, he looked into my eyes today, he saw that I was ordering out of habit, maybe even out of guilt for the last slice on the rack, and he went " no, not today, today you will eat something fresh and delicious because you deserve it" and by god was it ever. Sauce ratio: perfect, greasy: just enough to make it delicious but you don't feel gross. Pepperoni ratio: ABSOLUTELY perfection. Structural integrity: you betcha.
