Sometimes you find yourself at a place that is so cool, that it makes you feel super cool too. That's Cold Beer & Pizza. The melding of three of my favorite things: beer, pizza and cool places.
I like this place nestled away on 17th Avenue, from the moment you walk in you get exactly what the name promises. Cold Beer & Pizza. Firstly, it's important to know that the setup here is as such: two parts of the joint -the bar and the kitchen. Pay for your drinks at the bar, pay for your food at the kitchen. The bar has a GREAT selection of beers from some of the cities best breweries, plus some slushy cocktails, ready to drink cocktails and wine for those who like to keep it classy. I was VERY happy with the selection of beer.
Then comes the pizza. I was really stoked about the options and flavours and I look forward to ordering some full pies next time. But since we were just in for a snack, we sampled a slice of the Diablo and the Marge and split a Caprese salad. The pizza was great! The crust was quite dialed in, perfectly substantial but also light. The sauce was a little bit too sweet for my liking but it was not bad. The Caprese salad was fantastic. For $14 it felt like a fantastic deal with lots of tomatoes, fresh basil, and a dollop of whipped ricotta.
The staff here was fantastic. Our bartender was great and helped us navigate our beer selections our kitchen server was also awesome. We indicated to her that it was our first time visiting And she gave us the perfect rundown of the food.
The room itself is pretty awesome with the selection of tables and booths inside a good sized outdoor patio and then also an indoor outdoor patio. It was a gorgeous day but because of all of the wasps that have plagued our city this month, It made it next to Impossible to sit outside. So we settled for a table inside.
I really love this place! It had a great vibe and a great feel. It was perfect on a hot summer day. I look forward to coming back again for more...
Read moreI was excited to try this place, we live less than five mins away so was happy to see a chill place with bar service. We had a couple of beers and some pizza, we were finishing up when a server came over and said "we can't have you rolling at the table, it looks bad for other customers". Assuming she thought we were rolling cannabis (which is also legal) I replied "oh, even a cigarette?" to which the server replies "no, it looks bad to others". I was not rolling Cannabis.
I will say I am not originally Canada, I am from Europe where people roll cigarettes all the time, but I have lived here in Calgary for 6 years and am now a citizen. It think I have lived here long enough to be able to conduct myself appropriately in this culture and really believe I am not the type of person to be inconsiderate of others. This is the first time in my life that I've ever been told I'm not allowed to make a cigarette in a bar. Especially a bar that is open til 2am some nights, I saw this place as family friendly but not family orientated? Having spent time at other family friendly breweries like Two House and Best of Kin, I've never got the impression my behaviour is unacceptable.
Being shamed for a behaviour I've never once had negative feedback for left me feeling pretty bad about myself. I wonder why, in a room full of mostly adults, we can't be trusted to behave like them. What a strange...
Read moreIt's always risky going to a restaurant on its opening day, but CBP was up to the task and did a fantastic job. The transformation of the former Waves space is incredible, really worth the wait. I'm not a huge fan of beer and was most excited to have a local (very local for me as I live barely two blocks away) source for Roman-style pizza, which is sold in squares and looks a bit like Detroit or what we used to call (in my NW Indiana hometown) "Sicilian" pizza, and only having had it once and having enjoyed it a LOT, I was happy to see it here. I got three slices to go. Now, a "slice" is $6 but it's massive; three was probably too much. It's counter service, which I vastly prefer over table service, with the six or so pizzas on full display. I got one each of the diablo, the potato one, and the one with mushrooms and ham. The winner, by a kilometre, was the potato- I LOVE potato on pizza and this one is thin slices and it's savoury and just fantastic. If you like pepperoni you'll love the diablo, but I found that salami a bit overpowering. It's beautiful, though. The ham-and-mushroom was great as well, but as it was my third slice it had cooled off too much- next time just two slices. Service was FRIENDLY and unbelievably fast; I was in and out with my box of pizza before I even had a chance to explore the resto adequately. But what I saw I...
