Another edit that there was no issue with my card, the awesome staff at the Chinook desk checked and it had the exact amount I had given to the staff at hula, and I was able to spend it elsewhere with no problem. Hula was just unable to process a split payment, which is a pretty easy and standard practice across retail. Overall, expensive price for a small amount of food, and I'd never waste my time or money here again after the bad customer service and awful response from the owner blaming customers for poor training of staff. Shameful and embarrassing. It's ridiculous that they blame the customers for their own incompetence. I do agree that it would have been kind of me to leave a review previously when I had good experiences and I will try to do so when I have positive experiences with other businesses.
Editing to clarify after the response from the owner (which has since been erased, and I guess isn't surprising, as customer service starts with management): I've had Hula before because firstly, it's a chain restaurant, and secondly, I've been to the mall before. The location isn't new and I'm not a first time customer. Maybe the food at the Chinook location isn't good anymore, my mistake. Thank you for the correction, I've adjusted my review accordingly. I also never said the prices were hidden, just high. I'd certainly not consider returning to the Chinook location based on the customer service from both employees and management.
Food is very overpriced for the mall food court. Between 3 employees they couldn't figure out how to split a payment to use up the remainder of a gift card balance, which was disappointing but not the end of the world, but they weren't very helpful or nice about it. Ended up going elsewhere. Really frustrating and not...
Read moreI have ordered from here at least 4+ times for my entire family and it's so inconsistent. Sometimes the rice is undercooked and hard and chewy in a gross way, sometimes they really skimp on the fish so you're mostly paying for rice and sauce. When you complain, they really don't care. 2 out of the 4 times we've had to throw some of the bowls out. Other times it's actually pretty good, it's hard to find a place that has coconut rice instead of sushi rice for poke. The chips are not bad (portion size is small) and the drinks are pretty good but also expensive.
I appreciate that they are gluten friendly and I haven't gotten sick from eating their food but I certainly don't feel safe after the most recent time. The staff had no idea what I was saying when I told them I was celiac (literally said "what's that? what's celiac?" and when I asked them what sauces/products have gluten in them or how they avoid cross contamination they just looked confused and said "only gluten-friendly" over and over again. Super unhelpful staff and they really don't try to do anything beyond the absolute bare minimum in terms of service. I understand what "gluten-friendly" means, I wanted to know HOW it was gluten-friendly. It's too bad because every time I order it's for 7+ people but they couldn't be bothered to tell me what was safe for me to eat and what wasn't or tell me they'd be more careful when...
Read moreI was excited for the idea of mall poke because so much food at the mall is bad fried food. Unfortunately I was not impressed with the food or service at Hula. Went here recently and ordered two bowls. They were fairly small for $12-$15 each, but a decent amount of fresh veggies and things which was good. I ordered tuna on both (we don't eat chicken) but one came with chicken instead. No big deal I thought, we'll take it back and they'll make the right one.
In fact the person working there was extremely confrontational, and essentially accused my wife of lying (the bowl was still nearly full so I'm not sure what we would gain from this).
Eventually they reluctantly agreed to remake my bowl. It had only three or four tiny pieces of tuna in it, I'm not sure if they gave me less because they had to make it again or not, my daughter's bowl looked to have a bit more. Shortly afterwards however, both my daughter and I felt very sick. Eventually we both recovered, but I have a strong suspicion something was wrong with the tuna as it was the only thing we both ate together all day.
Below par food and terrible service, definitely will not...
