Went to Montana's as a family of 5, deciding to give it one more go after our last awful encounter here with poor service and dry food. Sadly, it was the same experience again.
Right away you could tell the staff was busy and struggling to keep up. The host repeatedly said they had to wait for tables to be bussed, to be open. We waited 10 minutes, not a long wait at all, but as we walked to our table I noticed there were quite a few tables not being cleaned or half cleaned then walked away from. Strange. Our waiter came, took the drink order and left. It took over 10 minutes to get our drinks. We didn't say anything because he was clearly struggling. He was awkward and looked like he wasn't comfortable talking to people. We get an Appy, spinach dip, which was sooo good with their bread and the only good thing about this night. Before our food arrives, I notice a family sitting that was sat 10-15 min after us, already eating. I mentioned it to the waiter after our food finally arrived and the other family was gone 2 minutes after that. We were told this was because we got an appetizer, which doesn't seem right, it took nearly 40 minutes to get our food which was why we got an appetizer. We knew it might take a bit longer tonight. Annoying, but not the end of the world. When the food came, the night went down hill.
One person got a 10 oz steak, loaded potato (that you pay extra for), and a side of coleslaw. The steak was more well done than medium rare, so tough it was difficult to chew, and there was a lot of gristle. The baked potatoe wasn't very warm and so dry, when you tried to take a bite it disintegrated, and the extra toppings we had to pay for were nearly non existent. They did bring a few extras for toppings later when even the manager agreed it was skimpy. The side of coleslaw? It came in the same little dish they give you a tbsp of ketchup in.. that's not a side. That's a garnish.
The brisket burger was supposed to have BBQ sauce, but there was none in sight. Nothing on either side of the bun. The meat was incredibly dry and over cooked, that BBQ sauce was really needed to swallow this thing down. They did bring out more sauce, but still disappointing.
2 meals, the fries came out soft/mushy and cold. It was apparent they say for a long while while the burgers were getting to the plate. They did bring out fresh fries, but at that point we were just over the whole night.
We also ordered a kids meal, which came with a single carrot sick, I'm guessing as a garnish but it was lazily thrown onto the ribs. And last we ordered a full rack of ribs. The fries for those ribs came cooked as well, and again, the side of coleslaw was a tbsp amount. At least they weren't over cooked though.
This was a birthday dinner, after a long, hard day for my daughter. While we appreciate the manager bringing out more toppings, new fries, and taking 15% off our bill. We can't get over the lack luster food and service. Our waiter came by twice the entire time to refill drinks. Both the manager and waiter clearly struggled with interaction and any confrontation. To which we never yelled, just voiced our displeasure, but it made everything super un enjoyable and awkward at our table. We quickly got up and left.
We won't be back again. Too many times we've had the same experience. It's too expensive to not enjoy your food and feel...
Read moreOn Wednesday, March 6/2024, my husband and I visited the Montana's on Beacon Hill in Calgary, Alberta - and had one of the worst experiences that we've ever had at a restaurant. We went for the All You Can Eat ribs special.
About 20 minutes after we placed our order, of a starter pulled pork nacho and all-you-can-eat ribs we were informed by our waitress, that the manager had told her they ran out of ribs, and we were asked if we would like to order anything else and our nachos would be comped because of the situation. She returned several minutes later and asked if we would like to order some food. The table behind us had ribs already as were seated before we arrived.
After about 30 minutes, our appetizer of nachos showed up - and the meat on it was ice cold. we informed our waitress and she said I'm sorry I'll get another made. About 20 min passed and she came out with a new plate of nachos. My husband grabbed the meat right off the top and it was cold to touch we called her back and said again the meat was cold her response was they just made it, he picked up a chunk and dropped the cold meat into her hands she said I believed you to which he replied, its here and we'll eat it. She said ok and walked away. You would think the manager would be involved by now, but we were never approached by them - but we saw a manager everywhere else wandering around as was getting closer to close and tables were emptying up.
As we started into nachos, our meals came a few moments later. She placed them on the table and asked if we wanted a refill on our pops as we had to get a drink to get all we could eat. My husband replied yes please, then she walked away - and did not return.
After we got our food, we overheard the same waitress ask the other table who already had ribs if they wanted any refills which they each replied yes and got 2 rounds of refills as we ate our dinner. She then promotes the all-you-can-eat ribs to another table behind us.
It's a tad frustrating to be told one thing, and then hear the complete opposite as it feels like we were discriminated against because of our physical size. (We are a larger-sized couple).
At no point throughout the 2 hours we were there, did anyone check up on how our food was, nor did we speak with a manager. While my husband was on an important work call, she provided us with a bill, while he was still away from the table, she came by several times to ask if we were ready to pay. When we finally paid there was only ourselves and 1 other table with people at it who were chatting and had paid quite a while earlier - which means that there's zero reason for us to have been ignored.
We understand you can run out of an item as silly as it is on its promotional night. It's just the fact that as the experiences got worse the care became lessened to a point of pure neglect.
