Today I gave 4 stars as it’s our first time here since they opened and will review the rating again after I’ve been there a few times.
My wife and I have been waiting for this location to open since the former business closed during Covid. We chose to have our wedding dinner with our close family and friends when a different business was there. We chose it then because of the atmosphere, decor quality of food and service.
The new Rockies & River restaurant's decor is mostly the same, and is quite beautiful and with new tables and chairs which absolutely suit the space. I believe most people coming into this restaurant would be quite surprised at the first impressions as they walked in the door. Modern and stylistic. Not your typical Chinese restaurant in Calgary.
No paper menus as of yet and not sure if they will have any in the future. Scan the QR code on your table with your smartphone, order what you like, from the ordering system and the server will tend to your table. They will add things to you order if you would like them to do so and process payment for you. You can’t do it on your own from the ordering system. This is not a bad thing however. I can see this system being a benefit if it’s extremely busy and you get seated but it takes a while for your server to get to you, can place your order before server even gets there.
Today we had the Sichuan boiled beef and the deep fried chicken with Sichuan pepper.
Orders came quick but we did arrive at around 4pm and not many people were in the restaurant at that time. It seems to really get busy at around 6pm.
Both dishes were absolutely fantastic. Delicious, spicy and numby. It’s nice to know we have a good new Sichuan style restaurant in Calgary again. Will be coming back for sure. Highly recommend Sichuan cuisine if you can handle the spice and heat. If not there are plenty of less spicy dishes to choose from they also do Cantonese, northern, & western style cuisines. Unfortunately no dim sum at this time. Not sure if it will be something they offer...
Read moreRecently, I had the pleasure of visiting Rockies and Rivers Restaurant, a newly opened Chinese establishment that has brought a refreshing addition to the dining scene. In the wake of numerous closures due to the pandemic crisis, it's uplifting to see new restaurants emerging. To my delight, Rockies and Rivers is a Szechuan restaurant, and I seized the opportunity to explore its offerings with friends. Our culinary journey included the flavorsome Szechuan boiled spicy beef and the intriguing spicy chicken cartilage. The spice levels were just right – enough to add excitement without overwhelming the palate. The beef and chicken were exceptionally juicy and tender, showcasing the chef's skill. Recognizing the diverse preferences of their patrons, Rockies and Rivers also caters to non-spicy enthusiasts. We ordered a selection of non-spicy dishes for our kids, ensuring a well-rounded dining experience for the entire group. A notable feature is the innovative ordering system, where customers can conveniently use their mobile phones by scanning the QR code on the table. While this modern approach has its advantages, I suggest the inclusion of a traditional menu for those who may be less comfortable with mobile ordering. Despite this minor suggestion, my overall experience was enjoyable, and I look forward to returning to Rockies and Rivers to explore more of their enticing menu. The diverse array of dishes and the commitment to both traditional and contemporary dining experiences make it a noteworthy addition to the local...
Read moreI am writing to express my extreme disappointment with the service we received at your restaurant this past Sunday. As regular patrons of your establishment, we have always enjoyed our visits. However, our experience this Sunday was far from satisfactory.
When we arrived, we inquired about the wait time for a table for six. Instead of providing a clear answer, the manager rudely responded, "We are cleaning two tables right now, can't you see? just be patient and wait, ok?" which was extremely rude and did not address our question. We actually can't believe this come from the manager. We patiently waited for 20 minutes, only to see both tables taken by other groups who seemed to have reservations. No one came to explain the situation to us.
We approached the manager again to ask about the wait time, and her response was, "There is one more table that's almost ready. We Told you We will call you once it's ready!!" She almost yelled at us this time. We could see that the table was ready, yet no one came to seat us. We ended up standing at the entrance for another 10 minutes. Finally, a waitress noticed us and waved us to our table, which had clearly been ready for 10 minutes, meaning our additional wait was unnecessary.
The lack of communication and the rudeness of the staff, especially the manager, was unacceptable. This experience has left us certain that we will not return to your restaurant...
