A Hidden Gem for Authentic Indian Food in Calgary
I visited Tandoori Grill three nights in a row during a recent trip to Calgary, and each visit reinforced what a special place this is. It’s a casual, no-frills, mom-and-pop-style restaurant—definitely more of a takeout spot than a dine-in destination—but the food and hospitality made it one of the highlights of my stay.
On my first visit (a quiet, rainy Friday night), I walked in expecting a simple meal—and ended up discovering a place I’d return to again and again. The server, Amol, seemed a little surprised that I planned to dine in—he probably assumed I was grabbing takeout back to my hotel—but he welcomed me warmly and made me feel right at home.
At first, I was about to order something familiar—Chicken Tikka Masala or maybe the Honey Butter Chicken (I think that’s the standard move for a guy like me at an authentic Indian restaurant). But Amol gently steered me toward the Chicken Kadhai, which he said was a house specialty. I paired it with Butter Naan and a side of rice, and I’m glad I listened. Every bite was rich, spiced just right, and clearly made with care. The meal was filling and deeply satisfying.
The next night (Saturday), I came back for the Beef Masala in a bold red sauce, along with more of that perfect naan. I skipped the rice this time, having learned just how generous the portions are. Again, the flavors were excellent.
On my third night (Sunday), I tried the Lamb Biryani. The taste was excellent—aromatic and savory, served with a refreshing yogurt sauce that also paired nicely with Garlic Naan. That said, the portion leaned heavy on rice and light on lamb, which I mentioned to Amol. Without hesitation, he brought out a side of extra lamb. That simple act of kindness says everything about the kind of place this is.
The restaurant itself shows its age—probably no major updates in 15 years—but there’s charm in that. It’s a local spot focused on what really matters: delicious food and genuine hospitality.
At around $25 CAD per meal, it’s a fantastic value for a hot, home-cooked Indian dinner. I wouldn’t hesitate to come back the next time I’m in Calgary, and I wholeheartedly recommend Tandoori Grill to anyone looking for an authentic experience. Special thanks to Amol, who made each visit memorable with his warmth, sincerity, and great...
Read moreHands down best Curry house in Calgary! We live close to Okotoks and unfortunately there aren't any good curry restaurants near us. We found this place by chance after Tandoori Hut was closed Christmas Eve a few years ago. Haven't gone anywhere else since! The food is AWESOME and consistently the same every time you go which we never found at any other restaurant in the area and since Mike has taken it over it has just got better and better. Mike has awesome customer service skills and makes you feel like a valued customer every time you go. The portion sizes are incredibly generous and we feed our family of four with 2 curry dishes. The naan is cooked fresh in house and with the viewing window you can even see them making it which is cool to watch! The naan tastes awesome when you eat it fresh in house. They have also added extra seating in the back now so it is possible for more folks to eat in. They also offer you the opportunity to pick your spice level for each dish which is a big plus for me as i love spicy and my family love mild. They love the butter chicken and I love the chicken tikka labrador. Check this place out it is a hidden gem. Just wish I could move it closer to where we live :) I'm from the UK and usually go back to the UK for visits craving good curry. Since finding this place I actually now go to the UK wishing I could get this curry there.
Keep up the...
