I came all the way from Vancouver to try out Ladner Sushi with my family since we had tried quite a few number of sushi restaurants in Vancouver and Richmond already. The drive wasn’t too long compared to driving to Gastown Vancouver from my home, and the place is an even shorter drive from Richmond. Service was good and owners were friendly. We were greeted right when we entered and promptly seated and served with tea. It was our first time here and they recommended the Fire Dragon Roll.
As standard, I tried their tuna and salmon nigiri sushi and was impressed. Unlike most sushi places where cold, bland rice is served, the sushi rice served at Ladner’s is closer to room temperature (which is vital for maintaining the texture and flavour) with the appropriate hints of sweetness, saltiness and sushi vinegar sourness that sushi rice should have. The rice that the slice of raw fish is served on is what distinguishes sushi from sashimi. I was impressed with the combination of the well-seasoned sushi rice at the proper temperature and the coolness of the raw slice of fish on top. This is sushi (not sashimi with rice).
Each sushi place has their own special rolls, and I ordered two to try out—their Fire Dragon Roll (which they recommended) and their Awesome Ladner Roll. Again, surprisingly, both were good. In fact, if “good” means “not bad” when you visit a new place, then what I mean is that they were actually delicious. Their Awesome Ladner Roll is like a light spicy tuna special roll that is intricately packed with flavours--it’s a strong yet light roll at the same time. The Fire Dragon Roll had a slightly thicker sauce and an overall stronger flavour if that’s what you like. It was the first time avocados tasted this good on a sushi for me thanks to its mesh of flavours.
I also tried the tuna and salmon maki. Again, they use a flavourful nori and not a bland one. If you prefer your nori to be crispy, try to minimize the time the maki rests as the moisture in the rice will be absorbed by the nori. I do not expect a sushi place to toast their nori, and to be honest, I let my maki sit for a bit before I got to it so I’m just going to comment on the tastiness of their nori which was quite tasty. As a side not, considering how many people order takeout, nobody really pays attention to the crispiness of the nori anymore. If you do care, try to order a simpler maki as it will reduce the time the rice is on the nori as it is being topped leading to less moisture absorbed by the nori.
As for their salad, if you’re reminiscent of the blended Japanese Restaurant-Style salad dressing with that zing served over crunchy greens, then this is what they serve. The last few sushi places I visited did not dress their salads like this so it was nice to see Ladner Sushi using the familiar salad dressing I was used to.
I also tried their Beef Teriyaki On Rice, Oyako Don (which my father had), Agedashi Tofu, Prawn Tempura, Miso Soup, and Seaweed Salad. Clearly, while not every dish is going to be over the top delicious as everyone has a different palate, I can say that surprisingly even the least appealing dish tasted not bad, which is probably a big achievement in modern standards. My family tried their Chopped Scallop Roll and Udon which I didn’t have so I can’t comment on those.
Overall, out of the dishes I’ve tried, what stood out to me were their sushi rice, seaweed, and special rolls. I will probably be back to try their other special rolls and their baked oyster which I...
Read moreI recently went there for lunch with my girlfriend, because the sushi place we usually go to is closed on Sunday. As we were walking in I couldn't help but notice they had "lunch boxes" on for $7.99. After we were seated a gentleman came to take our order, I told him we would take a "lunch box" my girlfriend said she would have the same. The issue came with the bill, the amount owed was $23. I thought this was strange due to the fact we ordered 2, $7.99 lunch boxes. Once the owner came, he informed me I had ordered the "lunch box" which was $11 and that I should have ordered the "bento lunch box" (which is the exact same only smaller). I told the owner that really was not fair to have 2 lunch boxes that are only separated by one word "bento" and that he should change the wording to avoid confusion. The owner, on the other hand, disagreed with me and told me that I owed him the full amount. I tried multiple times with him to work something out, I felt I should have paid for the 2 smaller "lunch boxes" that I thought I had ordered. I then told him that I felt ripped off by the sign that said $7.99 and that this would be my first and last time ever coming back to his Restaurant. He responded by saying "o well" and that it was my fault, and that I should read all of his confusing menu. So, in the end, I paid him the full $23 that he demanded or he said would call 911 (over the $6 difference). The entire time the owner was extremely rude and disrespectful and often times laughed at me. After this confusing and overpriced lunch, I will definitely NEVER GO BACK UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES and would definitely recommend going to another sushi place in Ladner (there are many) where you don't have to put up with this rude man. These people run a shady business and are not honest businessmen, I felt as this man has stolen from me, then had the nerve to laugh in my face.

Read moreOur family absolutely LOVES Ladner Sushi. We have been going there for about a year now and our experiences have only been positive EVERY time!
To start, the customer service, is outstanding. Ken and Yvonne, the owners, are so incredibly attentive and thoughtful. They remember their guests and the conversations you have with them. Compared to other sushi places in this area their level of customer service is beyond compare. Building relationships with their customers, they make the atmosphere of their cozy establishment feel familiar and comfortable. They are great with my kids and that is a wonderful feeling as dining out with young kids can be very challenging.
Next, the food is THE BEST!!! The sashimi is fantastic quality and so fresh. Everything they serve is delicious from their unique specialty rolls (highly recommend the Super Hornet Roll), scrumptious Nigiri to crispy tempura. We love visiting the restaurant or taking food to go. The service is always prompt and on point and we have never been disappointed. I can't say enough good things about it. Keep up the great work Ladner Sushi!!...
