Boardwalk Burgers has all the right staples. Burgers? Check. Shakes? Check. Fries? Check.
The logo and graphic decals that adorn the walls are fun and amplify the feeling that Boardwalk is an established burger joint. A bit of sleuthing online showed Boardwalk first opened in Maryland and expanded across the US, Canada and has even expanded into Saudi Arabia and Iraq.
When we arrived at the counter we were kindly greeted and promptly set out to place our order. We ordered a lettuce wrapped chicken burger with avocado and cheddar cheese; a medium fry with a cheese cup on the side for dipping; and a double patty Boardwalk Classic with standard toppings (lettuce, tomatoes, American cheese, mayo, and ketchup). My husband was keen on ordering a BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger at first but was surprised to find the bacon was chicken bacon and that pork in any form was not present on the menu.
After ordering and paying we were provided a buzzer and instructed to come to the counter to pick up our food once it went off. We selected a booth and waited for our food to arrive.
Once the buzzer went off my husband got up to retrieve the food only to find it was already on the way to our table.
I was amused by my lettuce wrapped chicken burger as it appeared at first glance like I had just received a basket of very fresh lettuce. While I was pleased with the decision to reduce my carb intake there was no way I could pick this thing up and eat it like a burger — I tried. It could only be consumed by cutting the whole thing with a knife bit-by-bit and eating it like a very strange salad. At this point in time I thought of Red Robin's lettuce wrapped burgers and how easy they are to consume and I shed an invisible tear. When I did happen upon the chicken patty it was tasty, easy to cut into and moist.
Food was tasty; however, the claim that the fries were America's #1 Fries I had to lift an eyebrow to. Any item with a #1 claim is destined to be outranked at some point and sure enough the fries were just okay. They were nice and piping hot but I found the flavour to be lacking and didn't taste anything (salt? seasoning?) that would make me continue coming back just for the fries.
Service was friendly enough and the restaurant had a nice selection of standards one would expect at a burger joint. Pricing was fair as well with most burgers being in the $6.50 to $9.50 range and fries landing in the $3.19 to $5.19 range. To me, the restaurant was devoid of a groomed personality and unique experience that would keep it top of mind to visit again.
On a side note, if you have pork restrictions in your diet or are looking for Halal meat, I would highly consider visiting Boardwalk. Though the restaurant does not adorn their menus or restaurant with the phrase "Halal Meat" some additional sleuthing online showed that some Boardwalk restaurants are Halal. This makes complete sense as to why the bacon was chicken bacon. Regardless, if Halal interests you be sure to...
Read more-Food- The food here isn't too bad. When I visited, I ordered the BBQ Chicken Bacon Burger with Chipotle Chicken Bacon Fries and a Strawberry Milkshake. The burger was pretty good. I personally am not the greatest fan of beef in general so I was indifferent to the taste of the burger but the chicken bacon was really good. The fries were really good. The Chipotle sauce combined with the chicken bacon tasted really good. The fries themselves remind me of McDonald's fries except these are crunchier and unseasoned. The milkshake was pretty okay too. It doesn't compare to the ones at Fatburger but they are still pretty good. I also tried the Crispy Chicken Burger and the Chicken Tenders. This was a huge letdown. The chicken tenders were really dry and the outside was abnormally crunchy. The crispy chicken patty also had a similar issue. For some reason, the chicken did not taste like chicken. Personally I would not get it again.
-Service- The service was okay. The waiters/cashiers were really nice and helpful. Except the service was kind of inconsistent. My friends and I ordered a couple of times during our visit. The first time, the waiters buzzed three of our buzzers and we picked up our food from the counter, however one of my friend's food got delivered to our table. And the second time, the waiter/cashier buzzed our pager but tried to deliver it to the table and we ended meeting up halfway. Personally, I thought it was weird.
-The Rest- The seating is okay too. Some of the seats are kind of close together so it's awkward to get up and get a refill or whatever. Also, the windows don't have blinds. Because my friends and I made the mistake of sitting by the window, we just had the sun in our face the whole time. (This isn't a big issue for me though, just thought I'd mention it.)
-Verdict- Pretty chill place to hang out and eat lunch at. I would suggest to stay away from the Crispy Chicken Burger (the picture paints a false image of this burger, it looks good but does not taste good) and the Tenders. But the specialty fries and the poutine is good.
Forgot to take a picture of the beef burger and Chipotle Chicken Bacon Fries but those were the best ones out of the items...
Read moreI had such high hopes for Boardwalk here in Edmonton cause i remembered i enjoyed the one in Hoboken, NJ. Now when i went to the NJ one i had shared a cookies and cream milkshake, their philly cheesesteak and their boardwalk disco fries which were all so good...
so i decided to try their Poutine and the same cookies and cream milkshake here in edmonton as i was just going there for a quick lunch break and UNFORTUNATELY it just wasn’t good at all. First off it took them a really long time to put together 2 items, granted i’m sure they were frying the fries so they should be good in theory since its fresh but it just wasn’t. The poutine-lacked any seasoning of the fries or with the literal tablespoon of watered down gravy and a sprinkle of cheese curds. Like literally 10 or so pieces for such large fries you would think they could go a little more generous with them (see pic you can count them) Then the cookies and cream milkshake had like no taste at all for some reason. How do you screw up a milkshake? Its as if it had some milk and all just water. I had two sips and just had to throw it out it was that bad.
1 star cause i think they could do better!!! I’m sure this review will change if and when i do decide to give this place another try.
I should’ve ordered something else but until then i would not recommend those items or this place in general. It just wasn’t good and at almost $13 for just those two items i’d say save your money! Go to...
