It is very very hard to find a place that remotely replicates my favourite food joints back in Ontario. Having lived on 3 different continents and travelled so much I seem to be more particular on how good my food tastes and the service I recieve whenever I visit somewhere new.

This was a rare find for me here in Edmonton. I have a favourite restaurant called Barakats in Ontario....I have been known to drive 2 hrs just to purchase a meal there, and this weekend I found a place that is similar. Al Salam Bakery & Restaurant had shown me a little piece of home. For my first time visiting this place I was greeted with patience; given great suggestions on how to sample their menu and by the time I explored their grocery store my food was ready for take out.

There is an option to eat in as well but I chose to eat in the comfort of my home this time. Wajih was one of the individuals who served me that day. He was able to help me make decisions between brands and suggested beverages when I was feeling torn. The baklava is on point!!

I do find that the prices are a bit more than I pay in Ontario but overall the prices of everything seem inflated in Edmonton.

I look forward to making Al Salam one of my regular stops when I am in town. P.S. The filling in the spinach pita is...

I’ve been ordering from this amazing restaurant for a number of years now and have to say I’m very disappointed by my last two orders.

I always get the chicken shwarma wrap but my girlfriend ordered one last week and it was a sloppy runny mess, I said to her ā€œthat’s weird maybe they’re busy and it was rushedā€.

Then I ordered one today for myself and wow.. same thing. Very very greasy and oily meat, complete mess to eat and the flavour just was off. There’s an older gentleman that I usually see working there and he makes them delicious every time. Who ever is making them now is ruining the quality I’ve come to know here.

It’s always a toss up between al salam and Jerusalem Shwarma and after 2 very awful orders in a row I’ll be very hesitant to risk ordering again. These used to be neat and tidy wraps that are well made. Lately it’s been a greasy mess. Please, if you wouldn’t be happy receiving this as your order, don’t send it out. Remake it. This can only happen so many times before I have no choice but to look elsewhere.

I’ll change my review after the results of a future order.. if it’s back to proper quality I’ll amend this. If not then...

The owner of the place was treating his employees with no respect The girl did an honest mistake by giving us chicken shawarma instead of beef So he started yelling at her in front of us and other customers too And when I told him I will pay for all of them he told me go away I don’t want your money she is going to pay from her pocket! I told him no you don’t have to embarrass her in front of us or other customers He said ok pay for it and when I paid he told me get the hell out of here! And he started to shout at me because I was telling him this not right to treat your employees like this they are human not your slaves and then he swear at me telling me that your people are gross and he was coming towards me to hit me but someone stopped him This is brutal and this man needs to stop his behaviour can you imagine what he do for his own family! It not enough that this store is way more expensive than any other place!!! I went to pay for the food and he just escalated...

Absolutely loved my visit to Salam Bakery & Restaurant! The shawarma has an authentic, flavorful taste that really stands out, juicy, well seasoned, and satisfying. The kebabs were also delicious, grilled perfectly and packed with flavor. Service was friendly and efficient, and the serving sizes are generous, offering great value for money. A big bonus is the convenience store attached, which carries a great selection of Arabic breads and Middle Eastern products, super handy and adds to the overall experience. Highly recommend if you're looking for authentic Middle Eastern cuisine in Edmonton!

Very friendly staff. You can buy middle eastern grocery here. The location is perfect on 34 ave and Calgary trail intersection. We ordered four items: zater ajeen/pie, cheese ajeen/pie, chicken ajeen/pie and cheese pizza. The chicken ajeen and cheese pizza were fresh & yummy. The zater and cheese ajeen/pie were not fresh and were just heated...they do not taste good. They put black olive with the serving which I liked a lot. The seating area was very good with middle eastern atmosphere. I gave it 3 stars comparing it with other authentic middle eastern places in both Calgary & Edmonton.
