This is coming from the viewpoint of someone who eats Pho and Thai food for a living. The only thing is, my taste comes from what was available to me in Portland, Oregon. So taking into consideration that this is Edmonton, I will say this is probably one of the better places around here.
Is it any good? It was fine. I was hoping and expecting more since when I walked in, the place was filled with people in almost every seat, and seemed like a quite popular and loving place. The staff were very quiet and humble, but seem to open up to re-occurring customers. I personally didn't like that. The Pho itself, as I only order Pho Tai (round steak), was alright for my standards. One of the things I notice with a lot of Pho places around here, is that they either undercook the noodles, or the broth isn't strong enough to influence the flavor in the noodles. This place definitely did a better job on this than most of Edmonton, but still lacked that perfect flavor. Noodles weren't undercooked, but the broth wasn't flavorful enough to soak in the noodles just right, so you can still (slightly) taste the rice noodles while you eat them. I also ordered salad rolls on the side, and was quite unimpressed with these. The texture of the salad rolls were fine, but the 'salad' within the rolls had absolutely no crunch, and made it so it didn't really have any variety with each bite. The 'salad' within the salad rolls was all just one bland ingredient that was supposed to be changed by the sauce. The only thing is... THE SAUCE WAS BAD TOO. Some of the most underwhelming peanut sauce I have tasted, had minimal flavor.
Should you go? Well, honestly, if you are new to Vietnamese food, I think this is a great place to start. But if you are somebody who is experienced with Vietnamese food, especially outside of Edmonton, then you may not find this the best place for you. Especially if you are Asian. Seems like the audience of this place is only...
Read moreFirst of all I’d like to say I’ve been eating here since 1991. The owners are a VERY nice family who in my opinion, make the best Vietnamese food in Edmonton. I can’t say enough good about this hardworking family because that would take me 33 years, as long as I’ve known them.
I’ve had every item on the menu and have never been disappointed. The spring rolls? You won’t find better anywhere in Edmonton. They aren’t the skinny little ones from big bulk chain stores or other restaurants, they are homemade, thick and crispy and oh so good.
When I was in the medical field and ended up downtown, this would be lunch or dinner instead of my crappy sandwich made at home. I’d be eating here at least twice a week and could recognize a dish name simply by a photo, as most of us could.
If you want a great meal at a decent price, like to support local and love Vietnamese food like I do, I highly recommend this place. I’ve not once been disappointed asides from when I showed up on the one day a week they were closed so the family could rest up and spend time...
Read moreThis restaurant is owned or staffed by CHEATERS. In late Dec. of 2015 I went to Golden Bird to buy some takeout. I asked for the food, sat down, and waited. When it was ready, there were three employees and/or owners assembling the order. I was told what the very high price was. Then these three were all looking at each other and the bag as if something unusual had happened. When I got home and opened the two containers, I realized they had given me small portions of food. One item was chips of beef and it was bland. The other item was chicken balls that were mushy and a bit soggy. This restaurant is owned and/or staffed by cheaters. I was charged a very high price for for a small amount of below average to crappy food. ...
