Vancia Donair & Shawarma — Restaurant in Edmonton

We do a lot of our errands and shopping around the Unity Square on Saturdays and Hubby was in the mood to try something different. We were the only ones in Vancia when we popped in for a late lunch. It looked like there had been others in earlier because the tables had been used but not wiped down afterwards. We ordered at the counter; Hubby ordered a Mixed Meat Platter and I chose the Chicken Shawarma Wrap. While we waited for our items to be prepared, I wiped the table down as it was obvious that it wasn't something that was regularly done between customers and the other table in the establishment was dirty when we arrived and it stayed that way for the duration of our visit.The food was prepared in a goodly amount of time as expected and the flavours were good but not exciting enough to make us want to hurry back. Hubby really liked the garlic dip but agreed that although the food was good, it was average and not something we would rush in for again. The only other customer that came in while we were there was an order for pickup/delivery. While we enjoyed our lunch, the worker disappeared into the back kitchen and we never saw her again. Although I enjoyed the chance to try a new place, sometimes, if the front-of-house isn't well maintained, it worries me about the kitchen and food prep areas. I absolutely love the food at this restaurant, and the quality of their products is exceptional. However, I must express my dissatisfaction with their closing time, especially when, in my experience, it's often the female staff members on duty. According to Google Maps, they close at 10 pm, but consistently, I have found that the kitchen is already closed by 9:40 pm when she is working. When I inquired, she always informs me that everything is shut down, and they cannot prepare any more dishes. In contrast, when the male staff members are on duty, they tend to serve until the very last moment and are incredibly friendly. I understand that the employees may want to finish their shifts, but it would be beneficial for both the staff and customers if they updated their closing hours. This way, we wouldn't waste our time, and we could enjoy their incredible food without any issues.

It's understandable that certain ingredients or dishes may not be available later in the night, but it's not acceptable to be told that they can't cook anything or sell anything when they're technically still open. I work in customer service, and I know that at the very least, we should have something to offer until...

I am so disappointed. I started going here 2 years ago, they had good service, good flavourful food, and a clean work space you could see into. Now the food is bland, they have blocked the view into the prep area, which makes me think twice, and I am very confused by some of their menu choices. I ordered a chicken shawarma wrap for lunch today and it now has cold French fries shoved into it. Why on earth would anyone put French fries inside a wrap? Instead of crisp veggies with tasty chicken shawarma I got a mouthful of mushy cold French fries, and little chicken which barely had any flavour. I had to pull it apart to get the fries out and then eat it with a fork. I am so sad to say this but I think that’s the last time I eat there. I don’t know if ownership changed or what but it’s not the same...
