One of the best authentic Japanese restaurants in Edmonton Canada. Located in the heart of Strathcona by Whyte Avenue. Been a customer since 2017. Owner/Chef Justin is phenomenal! Whenever I dine in his restaurant, I feel like having a personal chef that prepares my orders just perfectly. Every dish is made to perfection.

Read moreWhat a fantastic experience! The sushi chef is so personable. I went in twice over the last two weeks and both experiences were consistently awesome.
The spicy tuna Maki is fantastic - the quality of tuna that they use is more like what you would expect on the West Coast. The tempura is so good - the oil tasted fresh and the pieces were cut with care. They even do a small slice of salmon with their small assorted tempura, on top of the two shrimp and delicious veggies selection. I have to say - the prices are very very fair! I was able to try A5 Waygu here for the first time as well. It was torched, sauced and beautiful presented - one of my favourite bites ever. I had some questions about sushi and Waygu beef and the chef took the time to show me the Waygu and it's authenticity, as well as going through different types of tuna with me.
The server there - she is friendly, attentive and clean. The atmosphere is cozy and a small-medium sized restaurant that doesn't feel cramped at all.
I have only been in there to eat twice and I have to say that the way I was treated on my second visit made me feel like I was a regular, more like a friend than a guest.
Thank you for the wonderful experience - I will be...
Read moreFirst of all, I found the prices to be extremely agreeable. All the menu items were fairly cheap and still offered quite large portions. The tableware was very clean and overall I'd say the place was tidy and had a very cosy feel to it. However, I was a little disappointed in the food itself. Everything was very bland. The pork in my katsudon didn't seem to have any value beyond texture. The most disappointing aspect of the meal was the rice. It had no flavour and had a very mushy texture. On top of that, there was no consistency with the temperatures: a cold egg was served on top of a very hot pork cutlet which was served on cold rice. The miso soup was also room temperature. I would recommend this place as a nice lunch location because of the price -- I don't think that I could recommend it for anything more than that unfortunately. It might be a good choice for those wanting to try out Japanese cuisine for the first time. Sakana certainly won't blow you away, but it's a safe option if you're in the mood for a cheap...
