Oh wimpys, how your diner has lost it's food and service values and charm since the new management took over. At first glance walking in, it seemed clean. Looks can be deceiving. The first table I choose my spouse did not want because their swinging door if not paying attention would or could take out whomever sits on that side. So we choose the next seat over. As soon as I entered the back of restaurant there was a faint smell of what I'm hoping was just musty water. The tabletop had what I'm assuming was semi dried yet still sticky syrup from however long before we got there, looked like they ran a dry cloth over the table instead of cleaning with a cloth and cleaning agent of some sort. Floors an seats were ok for the most part, I wasn't taking chance using the bathroom if the tables looked the way they did.
We sat had our drink order taken within a few minutes which was nice. I ordered a ice water, my spouse ordered a fountain drink. Apparently water comes in child size cup, all good not that thirsty anyway. I ordered the fish and chip special. I've had it on a couple occasions at wimpys since moving here. It was my go to. It's fair priced for a 1pc fish plus chips, Cole slaw and tartar sauce. 14.99. spouse ordered a wimpys burger. Food comes out, the burger had enough mustard and ketchup to almost be considered a stew. So much in fact that the buns had to be removed and the burger eaten with a fork and knife, which it can no longer be a wimpys burger. The buns were so soggy it almost smushed between his fingers and burger patty. The topping s like onion, lettuce and pickles were layered on like we were at a subway, not a diner. The one good thing was the lettuce was crisp and green. Not impressed with any other part of it. Now the fish and chips. I have to say the fish was cooked nice, wasn't over cooked. The fish wasn't oozing fry oil which is a hit or miss with many places. The fries were cooked well, the gravy was over done with salt and I had to use a few shakes of pepper (I don't like pepper) to tame down the taste of salt. The coleslaw was ok, probably the most decently made item on the plate. Then I see the tarter sauce. What in the actual f..k. They essentially just gave me a bowl of relish with a pinch of mayo. Again, not impressed.
Wimpys may not be a top notch restaurant, but for a quick burger and fish and chips it was our go to. Better than fast food, less expensive than say state and main or chucks. However, that is no longer the case. Pretty disappointed all...
Read moreI typically have good experiences here but my last visit left me needing to leave this review.
Incredibly rude and inattentive service. Myself and my partner were the only people in the restaurant at the beginning of our stay and I had to “bother” the server to take our order after she left us sitting with menus to text for a little over 10 minutes. The food was fine. You don’t go to Wimpy’s because it’s exceptional, but because it’s cheap and easy and right. It was fine. Never got checked in on during our meal but what did happen while eating was the other front of house staff started lecturing on the cooks about how they weren’t doing side duties and night shift found it too dirty in the morning. Not what you want to hear while eating. At this point we were one of 2 tables and this girl was yelling at the kitchen staff. We were waiting for our server to come back so we could get some after lunch drinks and instead she brought over the bill with no communication. I was shocked. I actually asked “did we do something wrong?” Because that was insane to me. As I was paying I told her we were going to get more drinks but she never checked back or asked before bringing our bill. We went all meal with empty glasses because she wouldn’t check in on us. I paid and left but I won’t be returning. Some days, the staff is SO lovely and welcoming. This review is not for them. This review is for the horrible service received last Saturday midday.
EDIT: went back today. Had the same waitress and an even worse experience. Ended up nicely asking for a manager and the server said no and “I’ll take care of you next time” when we kept pushing for an email for the manager to forward our bad experience. I’m not sure who the young lady was working today but she’s losing you customers with...
Read moreMy server was in the weeds. She seemed new at it. I remember being new at serving and I know all the things that can go wrong. They don't have an IPA, so I was reacquainted with Waterloo Dark. Which I thought was a strange substitution, but similar to a few black IPAs. It took a while for me to learn my beers, and it's really helpful if someone you work with is invested in learning about them as well. I had to get my food to go, partially my fault for not letting them know. She had the courage to come apologize for the slow service. I think she cared that she was doing terribly, haha. She also seemed like she was practicing good eye contact. I remember practicing good eye contact. She probably just had good eye contact skills, but for the sake of this next bit, she was practicing. Aristotle and I think she was trying to improve her character. Sometimes your first experience at a restaurant isn't going to be perfect, I think it was just bad luck. Or maybe I was just happy to be in a public place. If I go back and it's slow, I will write a scathing review with references to some of humanities greatest tragedies, like overfishing. Mostly to promote how bad overfishing is; that one has kind of fell by the wayside. Maybe I just don't hang around the anti-overfishing crowd., Which is probably why I almost ordered the fish.
That's how to write a review, probably. Good talk...
