I've been going to Ziggy's fish and chips for over 20 years. When I drove up I saw that they now serve Jamaican so I thought that either they were really expanding their Horizons, or there were new owners. It turns out it's a new owner. The sign still says English style fish and chips though so I thought okay I'm sure they taught him how to cook fish and chips and I will give him a chance. Argh.... It's so not good:( I hate to say this. He seems like a really nice guy; but if you buy a restaurant that has been serving only fish and chips and been profitable for 25 years I would suggest that you just stick to the recipe. The fish now has a very thick hard batter on it instead of the light crispy flaky batter. The fries used to be amazing and sometimes I would stop in just for an order; however they're not anymore. The coleslaw spilled all through my bag because there's no lid on it so the sauce all over my bag and all over the container kind of turned me off so I can't tell you how that tastes. I also didn't eat my lunch, I tried it! And I'm telling you about it! But it was a no:( I don't know if the Jamaican food is good, I'm going to say it probably is but I didn't try that. I hope that with my review here that maybe the new owner will just go back to serving the fish and chips the way that they used to be and then also serve his Jamaican food which is probably amazing and maybe I will give it a try next time. But it's his restaurant so he can do what he wants however here I am with my opinion:) or don't advertise English style fish and chips anymore because it totally isn't it. The ketchup they give us also some cheap name brand. The girl at the counter seems to be really struggling. She doesn't know the specials and is a bit lost and whispering. I feel like she needs an extra day of training because she doesn't have the confidence that she should. She seems like a very nice girl, just terrified. I loved the Jesus tunes on the TV. That part is my new...
Read moreThanks to family tradition, I have been coming to Ziggy’s since before I can even remember. The classic decor is so nostalgic to me and I am very glad they’ve kept the place mostly the same as it’s been for over two decades. That being said, everything is always kept completely clean and proper and the design and feel of the place does not feel dated in the slightest, it feels like home. The service is always impeccable, the staff is extremely polite and attentive, and they always create a friendly neighbourhood atmosphere that makes you feel very welcome and comfortable. I haven’t even mentioned anything about the food yet - it is without a doubt in my mind the best fish n chips in the Kawartha Lakes. Whether you decide to get the haddock, cod, or halibut, you will not be disappointed. My personal favourite depending on the time of day is either the halibut lunch special or the halibut dinner special. Both come with a hearty serving of golden crispy house cut fries, hand battered halibut fillets fried to a perfect flaky crisp, all to order, with creamy green coleslaw. (The dinner special comes with a slice of fresh home baked bread that is to die for.) If you are craving a plate of perfectly crispy fresh cut fries, flaky crispy hand battered fish, and service with a smile all for a surprisingly reasonable price, do yourself a favour and take a trip to...
Read moreThis restaurant has a very warm and cozy feel inside and the exterior is quite charming. To place an order you read the menu at the front and pay before sitting - the food is brought over when it's ready. Overall, the fried food had good taste at good value! We got the haddock combo (1 haddock, a TON of fries, jalapeno shrimp, and coleslaw) with battered mushrooms on the side. The combo portions are quite large - it was a lot of food for one person especially being heavy fried food, we managed to share one combo between 3 people. Another friend got the halibut combo which comes with 4 pieces of fish - which would be a better option for sharing. It would have been useful to know how many pieces of fish came with our combos in advance from the menu. Everything served in good time, and tasted fresh. I would have liked the shrimps more if they were actually spicy but that's not a huge set back. The seating was rustic (we sat on wooden booths), but not terribly comfortable to sit on for...
