Matsuya Korean House doesn't serve authentic Korean food but rather select Korean style dishes in their predominantly Hong Kong cafe menu. Yet at the same time they don't have baked rice/spaghetti dishes which really makes it a melting pot of somewhat random popular dishes including hot plate (teppan) rice, skewers, Korean style hot pot and bibimbap, and HK rice dishes.
The eel bibimbap lacks sliced vegetables but serves a fair amount of eel. Gilled pork neck meat with a fried egg was delicious and fairly generous. Haianese chicken was terrible. With no apparent flavour except a hint of chicken powder, the meat was tasteless and the rice again, simply had some savoury chicken powder flavour in it. Ramen. Probably worse than the haianese chicken. It consisted of a completely bland soup and use of vermicelli noodles instead of ramen noodles. HK style milk tea was rather bitter-sour which will probably vary each visit since their ratios of tea to milk (like many places) are inconsistent.
Overall, the food is extremely mediocre at best. Service is decent although there is one particularly lovely lady with a ponytail working there. We can all appreciate fusion Asian food however it appears that after my first 2 visits, they have yet to excel at any given type of Asian food. I find their name somewhat misleading since the only Korean food for now is more or less a hot pot, bibimbap and Korean instant noodles...
Read moreThe baked chicken curry was extraordinarily salty. I literally couldn’t eat it but since I already took a few bites, I offered to pay 50% for the 25% or less that I already ate. The shorter lady Manager with short hair, berated and yelled me about it saying I was lying or whatnot saying no one else was complaining (clearly not based on recent Google reviews), ending up aggressively snatching the plate off the table and saying to not give us drinks and also said something about I already drink the soup? LOL. This is in addition to them, sitting us down at a table that wasn’t clean with rice and food all over the table taking several minutes to come clean it, lots of difficulty to get even one waitress to pay attention to us, and also my friends drink arriving after he already finished his food, despite asking for it more than once.
The manager should be trained better as the commotion she created over an issue that’s worth a few dollars to them, despite the fact, the food was objectively extremely salty, was totally unnecessary.
The owners should review their manager choices as the restaurant was operating quite poorly, per my review and many of the other 1 star reviews I’m reading on Google. In general, the service was extremely slow and poor. Everything seemed disorganized and like a mess. Unfortunately, this business is gonna be ran into the...
Read moreI recently visited Matsuya with my toddler for lunch, and it was a disappointing experience from start to finish. As we entered, I noticed a red flag, but I ignored it. However, things quickly went downhill.
When I asked the staff if they had a high chair, they told me they were all occupied, despite only seeing one toddler using it. I requested to sit on the side so my toddler could sit beside me, but the staff member, an old lady with short blonde hair, told me, "Then no, you can find another restaurant." I was taken aback by her rudeness.
We eventually ordered food, but it took 10 minutes for the staff to take our order. The food was subpar, with salty fried chicken and other dishes that lacked flavor. We didn't finish our meal and asked to take out the untouched food. The staff then told me I needed to pay $0.44 or $0.48 for the container, which I found unreasonable.
When I paid the bill, I didn't leave a tip due to the poor service and food. As I stood up to leave, the same staff member approached me and asked, "Where is our tip? Give me a tip, at least 5% for appreciation." I was shocked and laughed, as I had never encountered such rudeness before.
I will never return to this branch of Matsuya. The staff were rude, the food was subpar, and they had the audacity to ask for a forced tip after providing...
