Peter’s on Eglinton did not live up to the hype from friends. We attended at lunch one weekend and booked for a group of seven. We were given nine chairs, which was very cramped and we could not move in or out of our table. We asked if two chairs could be removed but nobody accommodated us. We are finding it very difficult to fit into the space and so moved one of the chairs to an empty space behind our table only to be chastised by a person who seem to be the manager. We noted that later on the wait staff used the same space to keep extra chairs, so I guess our intuition to use that space was OK after all. What may have bothered me more is that the older man who chastised us slowed his speech down and talked slowly and loudly as if I would not be able to understand if he spoke at a normal pace. I found that slightly insulting but moved on. The food itself was average. Sandwiches, soup, and other normal fair. Nothing extraordinary and regular plating. I ordered the fish and chips, which was a very generous portion of fish and well done. The menu is not very extensive and doesn’t give too much of a choice as it revolves around the same type of menu items. I am not a sandwich or soup kind of person so I opted for the fish and chips.
Being on Team Canada, I was very surprised to see that Peters serves crackers made in the United States. I would have to look into this more and see if there was a Canadian option. Hopefully that changes soon and they change their supplier. Not sure if they buy other Made in USA products.
The environment was quite loud and we had a difficult time, conversing and hearing each other. A redeeming quality of peters is its beautiful artwork and stained glass. This is probably the best part about it. I would not really return for the food or the service, but I would just to look at the stained glass. All in all, I am not sure what the big hype about Peter’s on Eglinton is. To be honest, I wouldn’t really return. There are so many amazing places to eat in Toronto and the GTA and I have been to many of them. Peters would likely be on the lower end of the list of...
Read moreSo this place has so much potential to be a excellent restaurant, but it just doesn't quite hit the notes.
The host was sitting down facing away from the door when I came in. It was confusing when he suddenly got up and started talking to me. He wasn't super pleasant either, but I generally don't care about that.
Instead of seating me at a window two seater, he tried to sit me in the middle of the place on a 4 top, right next to another table with 4 people. Like, one, why not the two seater, I'm just one person and second, why right next to another FULL table when the place is empty?
I asked for the window and he immediately moved me there without issues though.
The place is old and dated looking, but that COULD be part of the charm.
The waitress was friendly and capable.
Let's talk food:
The smoked meat was absolutely delicious!! The fries could be great, but they were not seasoned at all, no salt, nothing. And because of the way these fries are, adding salt after the fact is impossible, it just bounces off and ends up everywhere except on the fries.
These style of potatoes need to be seasoned in a bowl as soon as they come out of the fryer.
The "rye" bread, definitely was NOT rye, it was some other kind of thick breas. I had asked for the rye to be toasted, which they did, although it was a bit overdone. Perhaps they misunderstood that I wanted "toast" instead of rye, which is not what I wanted.
Coleslaw was great! Drained (it's not the creamy kind), which was great, nothing worse than a bunch of vinegar on the plate being soaked up by the bread and fries. I think I would have preferred it to be creamy though and in a bowl separately.
The presentation could use some tweaks too. The open end of both sides should face the fries on the plate. It's minor, but I noticed it, so I'm mentioning it.
I'll come again if I go to the area again.
Hoping the restaurant takes feedback and works to improve these little things that could just elevate the...
Read morePeter's is a Mississauga staple that we decided to go to to celebrate a birthday. We ordered a variety of dishes and the food was lovely.
To start we tried the fried calamari, which came out very quickly. Highly recommend this to start as the calamari was tender and crisp. The sauce it comes with goes well with it.
We then got a Greek salad 'for two'. This bowl of salad is massive! It came topped with lots of feta and olives which we enjoyed quite a bit. The dressing here is not your typical vinaigrette style but more on the creamy/mayo dressing. It's tasty and again arrives very quickly.
We ordered a few different dishes and they all had one thing in common - portions are pretty generous! The steak and eggs were basic. I found the steak was not the best quality but it's worth the price of the dish.
The fish dishes were excellent too. The dishes have that home cooked feel which is really nice. Not too greasy or salty.
The smoked meat sandwich was huge and the meat was succulent. The only minor issue was that there was no mustard or horseradish in the sandwich which made it a little bit on the dry side. Still good however.
We finished with the rice pudding and a couple slices of cake. The rice pudding is lovely! It's a nice end to the meal as it's warm but not too decadent or sweet. Goes really well with coffee.
The cakes were quite fresh and simple. They were sponge cakes with buttercream filling. Nothing special but not bad by any means either.
Overall, the quality of food is good and the value is there. I would probably not get the steak and eggs again but would definitely return for the souvlaki dishes.
Lastly, the staff are lovely here. They were patient and friendly and make you feel at home.
Definitely recommend this place for a homely and...
