If you like the Indian version of Chinese food or Hakka Chinese, there is no better place than Royal Jasmine. Having heard a lot about this place we made a visit and, by and large, were not disappointed.
However, if you want a leisurely dinner to spend some time with friends and family talking, this is cleraly NOT THE PLACE to go. It almost seems that the management wants you eat and leave in pretty quick time. Given the crowds one could understand but they make it very obvious that you cannot stay for too long. Within 5 minutes of being given the menu at our table we had the server come to us asking if we had made up our minds on what we want to order. This was followed by two other visits within the next 4 minutes when we ultimately decided to order.
I guess in deference to their major clientele they do not serve any alcohol. I did not see any bar or bar menu. That, in itself makes sure people dont stay too long.
We decided to order an appetizer first and then the entrees. We were clearly told that we HAD TO order everything together. No explanation was given as to why this rule. Another indication that the management does not want you to stay too long.
The restaurant was very crowded on the weekend. And the aisles or space between tables very little. I kept wondering if there ever was an emergency and everyone had to exit urgently there would be nothing short of a stampede .
But the saving grace was the food. The portions were very sumptuous and the variety great. Not so much for a vegetarian. But those who like non-vegetarian food would love the place. Everything we ordered came out really well. Good food presentation and tasted very good. That would be the only reason to take some food from here.
Yes, you read right. TAKE OUT. I would never sit in and dine here. Order take out and enjoy some good food in the comfort of your own home. Unhurried and perhaps having a...
Read moreGreat food with a side of waitress attitude.
We went here tonight for Valentine’s Day. It goes without saying that Valentine’s Day is supposed to be a very special dinner. It started off great, we were quickly seated and the restaurant was gradually clearing up (this was around 9pm). The waitress came to take our order slip. She told us the African fries were wedges so we told her to remove it from our order. Then she told us we were ordering 3 dishes but we should know the quantity is for 4 people for each dish so it’s a lot of food. So we told her to take the crispy beef dish out.
Sometime later another waitress serves us our food and as she’s leaving she says we have one more dish coming to which I tell her no we don’t this was it.
30 mins go by and we’re almost done our food when a different waitress comes out and brings us the beef dish. We politely tell her this is a mistake because we didn’t order it, the table beside us clarified that it was them that ordered this dish (they had already been mistakenly served someone else’s dish as .)
When we’re wrapping up our meal our waitress comes to our table and accuses us of sending back a dish we ordered. We clarify to her that we didn’t order it. She rudely insists we did, takes out our order sheet and exclaims “IS THIS NOT YOUR HANDWRITING”. It was incredibly rude, upsetting and shocking. We clarified for her that we wrote it down but removed it when she told us it was a lot of food for 2 people. The entire exchange she refused to acknowledge anything and made us feel like we were haggling the restaurant. It was horrible. She was rude and it was embarrassing for us. Ruined our Valentine’s Day meal.
Food was good but I advise against...
Read moreWe came in on Wednesday, July 30th, around 9:30 pm for my birthday dinner and were seated and served by a waitress named Numa. We didn't feel welcomed or taken care of properly — she seemed pretty annoyed and disregarded a lot of our questions and concerns with a rude attitude. After we were seated, my mom's friend told Numa that it's my birthday and asked her to play the birthday music for us. However, she seemed like she didn't care, shrugged it off, and walked away. She didn't play the music until after the food arrived, and we had to remind her a second time. She still seemed like she didn't want to do it.
The portions of the food were disgusting. The chili chicken gravy was a joke — so much gravy, only 5 pieces of chicken, and a small "complimentary" bowl of rice. The soup only had two sizes — small and large. The large seemed like it was for 8 people, and the small would've been for only 1 person. This place needs more options for sizes, as well as proper portions. We asked Numa for advice on the soup sizes and shared our concern about how small the food portions are for 4 people, as well as the chili chicken gravy. She didn't really answer any of our questions properly or try to compensate for anything. Instead, she just laughed it off and said, "Sorry, that's how it's always served." Frustrated with her attitude, I asked, "So, chili chicken is served with 5 portions of gravy with 1 portion of chicken?" Her face got red, and she responded with, "Sorry?" Yeah, I'm never coming back here again. There are better Hakka options in the city that charge less and offer better quality food as well as exceptional service.
If you can't provide decent food, at least train your servers on...
