The taste of the food is incredible if you are familiar with spicier dishes from southern China, or the vegetables native to China. The dishes are definitely very consistently good in taste and portions, as I have had the experience of ordering them from Uber Eats many times.
The taste is very authentic but would probably not be what you expect if you mostly eat the Americanized Chinese food. The flavours are bold and umami, but probably not what you expect from the English dish names. There are many non-spicy options for those people that don't want to eat spicy, as well, such as Braised Tofu with Shrimp, Stir Fried Lettuce (not the leafy lettuce; I would actually translate it as Celtuce stem) with Salty Pork, Stir Fried Lamb with Green Onion, etc. None of their soups are very spicy, and I've enjoyed every one I tried.
Note, the style of service is probably different from what North Americans expect...the servers don't loiter around the tables and make conversation, but they are friendly in attitude and very prompt in coming to your table if you ring the electronic service bell at every table. The service is definitely more culturally aligned with what you would expect in China, not typical of American restaurants.
On our latest visit, my husband and I enjoyed the Fish Soup with Fresh Pepper & Purple Perilla, which the servers did warn us when we ordered that the dish takes a long time to prepare. The other stir fried dishes (Country Style Stir Fried Pork with Green Pepper; Stir Fried Cumin Lamb) arrived quickly, probably within 10 minutes, but the particular fish soup took almost an hour to arrive. However, it was so flavourful that it was worth it to wait for it to come to the table, and then to wait for the broth to continue boiling down at the table to a thicker consistency. They used a whole fish, which was probably killed cleaned and fried just before they put it in the soup. The crepey fish skin was a fun-in-your-mouth texture, and the fish meat melts in your mouth with a definite fresh taste.
We did come to celebrate an occasion, so we ordered more than we could eat, spent more than usual and ended up taking a lot of food home. All in all, despite their only taking cash or e-transfer for payment, it is difficult to replicate the taste of their dishes at other restaurants without going to downtown Toronto, Richmond Hill, or east to Markham. Knowing the work that goes into many of the items offered on the menu, I find the flavours and prices a good value.
Please do not order a hotpot here if you are not a veteran of spicy Chinese hotpots and the Chinese vegetables that go in them. Would recommend first-time visitors to try stir fried dishes, either spicy...
Read moreThe restaurant serve and food was good before Covid-19. i and my family miss the test of the food of the restaurant. Today i and my family went to the restaurant today for lunch. it's a HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE and Food is no longer like before! First of all, the portion of the food is very small. We ordered fish hot pot with vegetables. the fish is very little not worthy for $21.99. the portion of each vegetable is also small and cold, since they charge $1.99 for each kind of vegetable. since the portion is very small, we need to order more. After we got the bill, they charged DIFFERNT from the menu. the menu shows the first three veggies for $1.99. However, they charged $1.99 for each veggies. Just NOT HONEST for the business! Finally, it costs us $ 79.08 after tax. ACTUALLY, THE FOOD IS NOT WORTHY THIS PRICE AT ALL!! Secondly, THE WASHROOM IS TERRIABLE DIRTHY. IT'S VERY EASY TO TELL THAT THE WASH IS NOT CLEANED AT ALL. the restaurant doesn't maintain the inner environment clean neither. How can they keep the food fresh?
Third, the waiter seems doesn't like to serve. we eat in the patio with AC. the waiter seems only want to stay indoor for AC. first time the waiter light the fire for hot pot. however, for second time my husband needs to to light the fire himself, while this should be his work!
I under it's not easy for restaurants to survive during Covid. However, we went to other restaurants also under the same situation. They serve better food then before and portions are also bigger. we can tell these restaurants make their efforts to impress customers and serve better foods which are worthy what they charge!
For this restaurant, I WILL NOT GO BACK AGAIN AND NOT RECOMMAND PEOPLE TO GO THERE. THE FOOD AND WHOLE EXPERIENCE...
Read moreDuring the pandemic, restaurant business is more relied on take out. This restaurant was one of my favorite as they used to have consistat food quality, decent food portion and readiness on time. However, this is until recently when they raised their price in this unprecedented time. Unfortunately, following the increase of price they are unable to maintain the usual performance. FOOD QUALITY DROPPED, COOKING IS RANDOM, PORTION IS REDUCED. AND MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL, EVERY TIME WHEN YOU ORDERED, PICK UP TIME WAS SET TO 30 - 45 MINUTES. THIS IS NOT ALL. WHEN YOU ARRIVED THE RESTAURANT, YOU MAY HAVE TO WAIT FOR ANOTHER 15 - 30 MINUTES BEFORE IT WAS READY. I AM UNABLE TO RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT BASED ON THEIR RECENT PRICE RAISE WHILE GIVE OUT THE OTHER WAY.
It has been a while without revisiting this restaurant only because it usually has a long waiting time. This time wasn't bad at all. We waited for approximately 20 mins to get a table. Food quality is good as usual but maybe kind of salty for people not used to spicy northern cuisine. There seems to be understaff but everyone worked really hard and tried to respond as quickly as possible. The restaurant is kind of small and people is lining up next to you when you are dining. I would give another star if a better arrangement for waiting is offered as no one would like dining next to a long queue. You would have a feeling of dining...
