I decided to give this establishment a try. For my initial test, I always try to get the same dish, Singapore Noodles. It is not a haka dish, but it is a dish I know well. It's also a dish that is easy to lack effort and do poorly.
I am happy to say that they did a great job. The dish was great. I asked for spicy, but found it only mildly spicy. Still very good though.
I plan to return and try some Haka standards (Chilli Chicken and Manchurian Shrimp Fried Rice). I will post an update after that.
Update: As planned I returned to get a meal with Chili Chicken and Manchurian Shrimp Fried Rice.
On the drive home, I could smell the aromas of the dishes wafting through my vehicle. The smell was very close to what I remembered that these dishes should have. Yum. Can't wait!
Getting home, I unpacked them and found 3 containers, 2 of rice and 1 for the chicken. The rice containers were stuffed to the brim with rice. The chili chicken portion was good, but a bit on the meager side.
Digging into them I found them very delicious and pretty close to my previous experiences of what these dishes should taste like.
They were both a bit spicy, but not dramatically so. The girl at the shop had suggested a medium spicy, but I asked for spicy instead. I am glad I did. While eating them I had to dab the top of my head a couple of times. So they were spicy, but not what I consider very spicy. If you like spicy, be sure to make your order spicy, and stress that you want spicy. Otherwise you might end up with White Guy Spicy tm, and no one wants that! 😁
Overall I enjoyed them completely and recommend them.
UPDATE: Unfortunately this have taken a turn for the worse at this establishment. I ordered Singapore noodles today and was told they no longer use rice noodles. I decided to try it anyway, but they seem to have abandoned all aspects of the dish. As you can see in the 4th photo, the dish I received has little resemblance to Singapore noodles. No yellow curry powder, no egg, it had tomatoes and broccoli and cauliflower (all not part of the proper dish).
So, no longer...
Read moreThe Hakka Club, located in Mississauga , Ontario, is a restaurant run by women, which immediately caught my attention and filled me with pride. Upon entering, I was greeted by well-dressed and articulate staff who not only provided friendly service but also offered excellent food recommendations.
Our meal comprised various dishes including Manchow soup, veg momo, veg chilli momo, sadhi waale chowmein, veg Manchurian, veg fried rice, and paneer chili dry. While the food was decent overall, the standout dish for me was the veg momo, which was flavorful and had a delicious filling.
However, I couldn't help but notice that some of the dishes, such as the chowmein, fried rice, and paneer chili, seemed to have a similar gravy base, albeit with different ingredients. This lack of variety made the dining experience feel repetitive, as the taste was consistent across these dishes despite differences in texture.
Despite the average food quality, the service was commendable. Our server was knowledgeable about portion sizes and provided guidance on how much food to order for our party of four. This ensured that we didn't over or under order, enhancing our overall dining experience.
In terms of pricing, The Hakka Club offers dishes at an average price point, making it accessible to a wide range of diners. This affordability is definitely a positive aspect of the restaurant.
Overall, my experience at The Hakka Club was satisfactory, but not exceptional. While I appreciated the friendly service and reasonable prices, the lack of standout dishes and repetitive flavors left me underwhelmed. As a result, I don't foresee myself returning to the restaurant...
Read moreOverall, eating at The Hakka Club was disappointing. The most positive thing was that the servers were kind, patient, and attentive to our needs. Apart from this, however, I can’t say many kind things.
First, we ordered 3 different chicken dishes that either tasted the exact same as each other (the Bombay and chili chicken) or tasted completely wrong (the honey garlic chicken tasted exactly like sweet and sour chicken). In general, the food was also very salty. I’m a lover of all things spices and seasoning, but even I found the Hakka chow mein and chicken dishes to be too much. Second, you are forced to purchase plain rice if you’re eating in but it is complimentary if you order take out — how does that make sense? Third, it really was overpriced. The cost of eating here was not comparable to other Hakka locations in the area. Fourth, there is a MANDATORY gratuity, no matter the size of your group. Pay your employees well, don’t put the responsibility on your patrons! Finally, the music was so loud that my group had to basically yell to hear and speak to one another.
I don’t think I’ll be coming back and I don’t think it’s a spot to go out of your way for. There are MANY other Hakka places in the GTA that offer better tasting food and better atmospheres. My advice is to spend your money elsewhere — somewhere where you will enjoy the food and not be forced to show your appreciation via a tip, instead being allowed to choose whether you would...
