Dek Sen Cuisine Thailand: A Thai Veteran's Lament
Ah, Dek Sen Cuisine Thailand. Where do I even begin? As someone who had the distinct pleasure of living in Thailand for years, I approached this establishment with a heart full of hope and a stomach ready for authentic flavors.
What I received, however, was a masterclass in Canadian culinary interpretation, with a mere whisper of "Thai" that felt more like a polite suggestion than a committed declaration.
Our gastronomic adventure commenced with the dumplings and their accompanying "peanut sauce." Now, I'm not one to throw shade, but I'm fairly certain the peanut sauce from Costco has more oomph, more spice, more... well, more anything than what graced our table. It was an anemic, saccharine affair, setting the tone for the entire meal: everything was too sweet. It's as if they believe the Canadian palate can't handle anything beyond a sugar rush.
Then came the pièce de résistance, the Pad Thai. Oh, the Pad Thai. A dish so fundamental to Thai cuisine, yet here, it was utterly, tragically awful. I specifically inquired if the chicken was breast meat, and with a straight face, I was assured it was. Lo and behold, my fork discovered boneless thigh meat. A minor deception, perhaps, but one that perfectly encapsulates the overall "cheap ingredients" vibe permeating the entire experience. It was a watery, clumpy, saccharine mess, devoid of any redeeming qualities.
Next, the Red Curry with Shrimp and Pineapple. My expectations, by this point, were subterranean, but even then, Dek Sen managed to dig a little deeper.
"Pineapple," they said. What I found required not just a magnifying glass but perhaps a forensic team and a pair of tweezers to locate the microscopic, flavorless specks.
As for the shrimp, I'm still debating if it was actually seafood or just cleverly disguised rubber bands. Taste? Zero. Impact? Negative.
But the grand finale, the crowning glory of this culinary catastrophe, was the Thai Iced Tea. A simple, refreshing beverage, right? Apparently, not here.
The milk had curdled. Yes, you read that correctly. Curdled. It was a pathetic, almost poetic ending to a meal that redefined disappointment.
In conclusion, Dek Sen Cuisine Thailand is not Thai food. It's a run-of-the-mill disappointment, a diluted echo of a vibrant cuisine, and a stark reminder that sometimes, it's better to cook at home.
My years in Thailand taught me many things, but perhaps the most valuable lesson was what real Thai food tastes like. This, my...
Read moreHaving been to many thai restaurants previously, and eaten at good halal thai restaurants around the world, I decided to come try Dek, especially to support a business serving Halal Thai food. I very rarely write bad reviews, but I deeply regret my decision as it was a disaster.
There were only two people to manage the entire restaurant. There was no courtesy to greet or even seat us. When we were finally seated it took at least another 15 minutes just to be able to order, and that too was only by virtue of calling the waitress numerous times. We, and other people, waited egregiously long times for our food. After 60 minutes of waiting for our order we were finally fed up and asked why it was taking an hour to bring a soup to start. The table before us had just been served, and that too the wrong dishes.
When we finally received our food it was very disappointing. The Tom Yum soup lacked flavour, but was alright to eat . The papaya salad which we love was an embarrassment of a papaya salad, and we couldn't even eat it at all as the taste was repulsive. The drunken noodles was the only dish that was somewhat redeeming and that too, it wasn't good, it was just not bad. The thai iced tea was nothing as it should be and just full of diabetes.
Finally when it came time to pay, I decided I would go to the counter directly, so as not to lose more time. It then took 10 minutes of me standing at the counter just to pay. I highly recommend you not to ever consider eating here, unless you wish to...
Read moreWe went because we saw a TikTok about how the food was. The food was good. Do try the beef pad sew.
The service was… i want to say confusing? When we got there we were sat but had to ask for a menu or we may never have gotten one. We ordered a mix of things and it came at random intervals so for a good amount of time only one of the two of us had our dish; makes for a bit of an awkward time where someone is not sure if they should start eating or not while their food gets cold. We were told on TikTok that the dessert were good so we wanted to order dessert. When asking to see the dessert list, we were told that the kitchen was now closed because they got overwhelmed by doordash orders. (It was just 9pm) Dude im sitting right here; should i have ordered dessert on DoorDash?
It’s like a ghost kitchen that makes good Thai food but has no idea what front of house looks like in a normal restaurant. We then had to ask for the bill twice and waited almost 20 minutes to receive it even though the kitchen was now closed and we could not order food if we wanted to.
Sad thing to see.
Don’t go eat there, maybe order since apparently Doordash...
