Glad I stumbled upon this gem!
I was in town for a short visit and decided to roam the streets to do some sightseeing and find delicious food.
After not so good of a first stop somewhere else, I saw an incredibly long but fast moving line outside what appeared to be a drugstore with everyone leaving with a takeout box and chopsticks (yes that's how you eat them unless you want an upcharge for a fork). Had to try it just for the ambiance. $5 Canadian gets you a very large helping of gnocchi pasta with cheese and slight upcharges for extra cheese and spicy, which were simply red pepper flakes atop the piping hot goodness.
Best eaten fresh right outside in the bench seating area I was mind blown at the simplicity and deliciousness of the dish. So much so that I went back a second time the following day for the spicy version, a feat that most restaurants don't achieve when I'm in a short trip as I'm excited to try as much as I can to experience the local fare.
This may sound incredibly insulting but is not intended to be: I found the gnocchi with cheese to taste like spaghetti-os or chef boy ar dee if they were 100x better and made with fresh pasta. Something about the sauce flavor was reminiscent of it. Also, I let my girlfriend try some when I got back to the hotel, and she made a similar comment without any coaxing, so I think it's a legit statement.
Regardless, they typically have a line that moves fairly quickly, the prices are good, portions are more than generous, service is quick and efficient, and most importantly, the food is extremely good. I would absolutely recommend as one of my favorite small bites, sharable street food choices in montreal, and I will definitely return if I am able to...
Read moreEven though I dont care for gnocci very much, $5 for gnocci is a steel and I would have been here all the time back in college. They have three options but they arent very different. The spicy version just has some pepper flakes on it and the cheese as a bit on top but essentially they are the same. That being said it is still pretty good.
It is stewed in a huge pot and half of what you get is sauce so it feels almost like a soup but thats not nessasarily bad. We got this in the blazing summer but this would be amazing in the winter.
The stand just fits their pot and a few employees so there it is only to go orders. That being said, one thing I like a lot about them is that you can bring your own mug and get a discount. Not only reducing waste but encouraging it too is great.
The line seems long and constant but it goes super fast considering every order is one of three things and they only take cash. Speaking of which, bring cash! There are ATMs a few blocks away but its still a pain to go get it if you didnt bring any.
Overall a great spot and iconic...
Read moreDelicious, filling, and super cheap gnocchi -- what more can you ask for? This cute, Instagram-famous shop window serves nothing but gnocchi with homemade tomato sauce; you can only get it to-go, and they don't sell anything else (although you can choose to dress it up with cheese and/or red pepper flakes). Although they only make one thing, they do it incredibly well -- the gnocchi is super soft and pillowy, and it's clear that they started as a tomato sauce shop. The sauce is remarkably flavorful, with the right balance of savory, acidic, and very slightly sweet. It's especially tasty with the pepper, although beware that they like to pour a vat full of red pepper flakes on top. It's served in a Chinese take-out container with chopsticks, which is very cute and feels a bit like a clash of cultures.
The staff is super friendly, and it's 100% worth a stop, especially at their price point of $5 for a giant take-out container. They don't have any seating inside, but there are a few benches nearby that you can...
