Terrible service / arrangement and potentially racist (which is strange for a Chinese restaurant but yes). We (four people) arrived at 7 pm and was told that the restaurant was full, though there were lots of big tables of ten completely empty without a “reserved” tag. We waited in line at the entrance for 15 minutes, and, when there was finally a free table for four, someone local people behind us (probably quebecois but I’m not sure) dashed to the table. They probably didn’t see us as we were sitting on chairs. When I came to the waiter (Chinese old man with Cantonese accent) and told him that we were the first to come, he refused to ask the local people away. He did not deny that fact that we came first, but still asked us to wait longer, as there was “not enough space” for us four. His attitude was rude and dismissive as if we were not customers but a trouble to him. I wonder what made he think that the table provides enough space for four white guys but not enough for four Chinese. It seemed that he just could not afford offending local people (even with a reason) but would not hesitate to offend people of his own ethnicity. He knew well that Chinese people tend to be bullied more in their lives (either in Canada or in China), would complain less often, and he was feeding on this fact in his business. This is unacceptable and made us so frustrated. We left immediately and would...
Read moreEverything was amazing until I went to pay for my meal. When I did, I couldn't afford to tip (I am a student who also works in the food service industry). When I proceeded to enter no tip, the waitress told me that because I had opted to dine indoors as opposed to getting takeout, I was required to tip. This would have been no problem if I had been told when I sat down that there was a mandatory tip or if it was written anywhere, but it definitely did not appear to be. When I explained that she had not told me that there was a mandatory tip and that I hadn't counted on being able to pay it, she started getting very upset at me and would not let me finish my transaction saying I was obligated to tip her. Very frustrating experience and rude customer service, but the food was very good. I unfortunately will not be coming again if this is how they treat their customers.
Edit (to reply to owner's comment) - You are correct. As someone who works in the food service industry, I do understand how important tips are for waiters. I also understand, however, that not everyone is able to afford tips and it is NOT the server's job to harass customers or question them when they do not leave a tip. The server should not assume a given person's financial situation and should never DEMAND a tip from a customer. If workers feel unhappy with their compensation, they should take it up with...
Read moreGreat staff, good environment, that's the best I can say for this restaurant. The food is below average.
The garlic pork belly (蒜泥白肉)should be a stack of pork belly with garlic sauce, instead they stuff thinly sliced meat with cheap cucumber, giving the appearance of lots of food, but in reality it probably costs less than a vegan burger to make.
The dry pot pig intestine (干锅大肠)has good flavour, but the pig intestine was probably frozen, thawed, boiled, put into storage, and then used again when called on. Fresh intestine is delicious just boiled and dipped in soy sauce, this place requires half a pound of chili and heavily flavoured sauce to make their intestine tolerable.
Finally, the Szechuan signature dish, spicy boiled fish (水煮鱼) likely used thawed frozen basa fillet as the source of fish. No need...
