Les Pyrénées — Restaurant in Montreal

Horrible experience, decent food. Synopsis: Spent over 200$ between my partner and I to have many mistaken orders, food that took over 2 hours to arrive to the table, and to be victim blamed by a manager who charged my partner for wine which he said was on the house to make up for our horrible experience.

I went to Les Pyrenees for a late night dinner with my partner. We ordered an appetizer and two meat platters sans gluten from a friendly-ish waitress. We saw our waitress walk out of the restaurant about ten minutes later, but figured her shift was over and thought nothing of it. About an hour later, we still have no appetizer, and no one has been by to refill our water glasses or update us on our order. Finally, another waitress notices us sitting there looking puzzled, and approaches our table. She brings us more water and then the manager comes out and asks us what we ordered and tells us he will check with the kitchen to see our order status. We tell him the order without saying the words "sans gluten", because we figure he is looking for an existing order, NOT reordering the food completely, and he returns to tell us the order will be out momentarily.

The appetizer, a risotto, arrives about 20 minutes later. It's tiny for 20$, and we're starving. We eat it in maybe four bites. About 20 minutes later (we've been at the restaurant now without our entrees for about 1h40m) our entrees FINALLY arrive. And there are gluten containing items on both plates. I have celiac disease and am sensitive to cross contamination. Unfortunately, my entree has to be sent back. The manager reappears and actually BLAMES us for the food coming out prepared normally, saying that when he retook our order, we didn't mention it. He didn't tell us he was retaking our order, he told us he was looking for our pre-existing order. My partner is fluent in French and English - there was no miscommunication. He leaves our table in huff, telling me that he will rush my entree. My partner, who is starving, begins to eat without me. I am also starving, but have no choice but to wait.

Meanwhile, the second waitress reappears and asks us why we didn't mention the gluten free when the manager "retook" our order. My partner explains that the manager said he was looking for our order, not that we were at that moment reordering, that it is a sensitive medical issue, and we try not to unduly repeat ourselves, given that our first waitress had already seemed annoyed by the sans gluten request. We tell the waitress that it's not her fault (it's not), but between the manager misleading us about our order status and then victim blaming we are not having a good night.

The manager reappears and offers me a glass of wine on the house. I accept, thinking it's the least that can be done by him to make up for the errors. My food finally arrives, a seafood platter. It's good, but I'm starving, and by that time, cardboard would taste good. I'm feeling warm and cozy from the wine (I never drink, so one glass for me on an empty stomach is a lot!), and I let my partner take care of the bill without looking it over.

The next day, my partner and I are talking about the experience, and I mention that at least they gave us the wine - and he informs me that they charged for it!!! Crazy! Makes me glad I didn't accept the "on the house"...

Celebrating our four-month journey living in Montreal, my wife and I were delighted to discover Restaurant Les Pyrénées, thanks to our family friends who have resided in Old Montreal for several years. This hidden gem offered a memorable dining experience, reflecting both the rich culinary heritage of the region and the vibrant atmosphere of Old Montreal.

Appetizer and Wine: We started our meal with a classic appetizer of dip and bread, perfectly paired with a bottle of Bodegas Aroa Le Naturel Navarra wine. Main Courses: For our main course, we indulged in two exquisite dishes:

Twelve Hours Braised Lamb: The lamb, slow-cooked to perfection, was incredibly tender and flavorful. Accompanied by spinach with roasted almonds and a delicate thyme sauce, each bite was a harmonious blend of textures and tastes. The roasted almonds added a delightful crunch, and the thyme sauce elevated the dish to new heights.

Rotinis with Chicken and Chorizo: This dish was a vibrant medley of flavors and colors. The rotinis were cooked al dente, and the combination of chicken, chorizo, crunchy vegetables, olives, and sun-dried tomatoes created a symphony of tastes that was both hearty and satisfying. The chorizo added a spicy kick, while the sun-dried tomatoes provided a tangy sweetness that balanced the dish perfectly.

Dessert: To conclude our meal, we opted for the Crème Caramel. This classic dessert was the ideal ending to our dining experience, with its smooth, creamy texture and rich caramel flavor. It paired wonderfully with the remaining sips of our wine, creating a delightful finish to our evening.

with my friend (we are both french, I live in NY he live in Montreal) we walked on that street looking for a restaurant for dinner. We stopped by the entrance and looked at the menu which was very very ättractive"and looked at the rating from google : 27 i believe. I NYC, anything above 25 is usually good so we decided to walk in. we ordered 2 local beers : warm, they were warm, WTF. Usually i dont mind too much cause i'm aware that most waiters are "actor or model"and that they don't care at all about customers, they just want the $, but hey 27 ... service must be up to part, right ? so we returned the beers and ask some other beers, cold ones. Looks like the waiter was aware but did not care enough to tell us that those original beers were warm (please take 1 point down for that). Then we ordered food, anchoiade as an appetizer to share, civet de calamar for him, bavette aloyau for me.

The waiter skipped the appetizer and brought us the main dished first (not so good, but I'm OK with that), so we asked him to bring it after the main dishes. Those 2 dishes were very good Ive got to say, cooked perfectly and very tasty, my only issue was with the meat sauce that was too salty (somehow, cook put too much salt and sugar these days in most things .... like a cheap shortcut). But it was good anyway, I simply skipped the sauce. My friend was pretty happy with his dish. Then we had the anchoiade, WHAT ????? anchovies served on salad, what happened with the puréed anchovies ? where are they ? So that was disappointing, quite a bit actually, to top it off, sweet dressing ... On anchovies ?? That's a NO NO and my book, personally.

Haaa we asked for more bread (good bread by the way), and to our surprise, they brought us "recycled bread", I have personally nothing about being green, NOT in RESTO where they bring you the bread basket with TRIED bread from a different table !!!!!!! Bread pieces with the white center missing !!! Really. 3 points less for that plus one for the anchoide .......

We finally had dessert, gateau roule for me and creme brulee for my friend : both were DELICIOUS ...... DELICIOUS.

So I get it, food is OK to GOOD to GREAT.
