Lola Rosa is probably my favourite lunch spot close to McGill’s downtown campus. The staff, the food, the generally comforting and comfortable vibe make it the perfect spot for a mid-day break.
I’ll be honest, given my dietary restrictions (yes, I’m one of those people) I don’t get too creative with my order. I almost always get the picante quesadilla: sweet potato and jalapeño purée wrapped in a tasty tortilla, accompanied by salad and brown rice. Yum! The dish is usually too big for me, but I don’t have a big appetite.
I’ve been to Lola’s with a variety of lunch partners (some veg/vegan, some omnivores) and everyone manages to find a dish they truly enjoy. I’m told the chili is particularly good. I’ve never had it, but it is one of my father’s favourite dishes.
If you are looking for a place to have a quiet conversation, Lola’s is not it. It tends to be pretty loud during the lunch rush. However, if you manage to snag a seat near the window (which is a garage door that is usually open during the warmer months), you can enjoy the breeze, have a lively chat with your lunch mates and do a little people watching in the McGill ghetto.
The decor at Lola Rosa makes it feel as though you are having a meal at a friend’s place. The seating is casual and comfortable. If you are a McGillian, you will probably run into more than a few colleagues.
If you do plan to go at lunch (or for dinner), I recommend you make a reservation. The place tends to fill up pretty quickly, and the restaurant isn’t very big (maybe 20...
Read moreI really wanted to love this place but I didn’t. The restaurant itself is super cute, the tables have drawers which you can open and read notes people have left behind. It was obvious nobody knew that as we were literally the only people looking in our drawers. Oddly enough there was no paper or pens either to leave your own note.
Food was okay but it didn’t blow my mind. I got a seitan burger and it was honestly terrible. The entire party was burnt to a crisp, so burnt in fact it actually felt sharp going down my throat. I didn’t want to be trouble as it was busy so I asked for more sauce but that didn’t help at all. Besides the burnt party the burger was DRRRRRRY, but side salads were good. The spinach lasagne was good, but again didn’t blow my mind. Not a very wide flavour variety going on in that dish. The nachos were the best part of the experience and the only reason this place got a few stars from me. My only criticism, if you’re going to use avocado put more than a slither or don’t put it at all.
The only drink I ordered was the sangria made with a local cider (the waitress wouldn’t tell me which label), but you have to mix it well and wait for the cinnamon to release some of its flavour before drinking otherwise it tastes like watered down cider with bottled lime juice.
This is a good vegan/veggie restaurant but they need a little help in the kitchen.
Also, your welcome for fixing the paper towel...
Read moreI have been going to Lola Rosa for many many years off and on. I just returned to see the restaurants painted "waiting room" colour with absolutely no character or homey energy in the space. The only charm left were the tables with the drawers holding the lovely notes. As soon as I saw the menu I knew I should have left. It was not the same eclectic diverse culinary experience. The very same menu as the Lola on William ,feels like an airplane menu. I lived in the building on William and the Lola there was horrible and expensive. I ordered the "philly cheese steak" and when the waitress put it in front of me it was absolutely terrible to look at food just slapped on a plate. I did not order the salad that comes with this item because as I looked at the other tables the salad looked like someone put their hand in a mixed salad bag from the grocery store and put dressing on it. The sandwich had three red peppers strips the size of a golf pencil , onions and the main "meat". Half was overcooked and half was undercooked. I ordered a skimpy non alcoholic raspberry lemonade. $30 with tip. Bread, satay? and a drink. I died a little inside. This was my most favourite place. The food was always memorable. They also didn't have many items on the menu and ran out of feta. The server was nice. I do not recommend to visit Lola Milton or place Des arts if you are visiting and googled "vegan...
