This all in one stop for crispy banh mi, perfect iced coffee and really good bun bo hue is one of my favourite quick bites. I've been coming here for a few years and got hooked by their banh mis. They also have curry and bun bo hue which was exquisite for a hole in the wall type of resto.
What determines a good banh mi is all about the bread and sauce. The bread MUST be crispy on the outside and still soft and warm on the inside. The first bite should only be determined by the crunch of the bread and the flaky crust that falls on your shirt. I usually only get the grilled chicken and their Vietnamese cold cuts sandwich. They start by spreading the bread with their homemade Viet butter/mayo, a very thick layer I may add. They're pretty decent with the amount of meat they put in and it's never dry. They top it off with pickled carrots and radishes, cucumber and cilantro. Their sauce is thick and just the perfect amount of sweetness. They accomplished the balance of flavors in the sauce, the ratio of bread to meat and freshens everything up with the pickled vegs.
Dont forget to try their ice coffee and bubble tea. This is definitely a place when I want something crispy as well as soupy. Ordering a banh Mi and Bun Bo Hue is always the way to go! If you buy ten sandwiches they throw in a free one, who does like free 99! I often get a banh mi for long road trips and it still stays so crispy and good after six hours in the car. I would definitely recommend this place for a...
Read moreSuper yummy and friendly Vietnamese Banh Mi and Vietnamese shop on Saint Denis St. in Montreal.
This place was recommended to me by a friend who had recently travelled to Montreal and it certainly didn't disappoint. The little shop is set up as part Asian snacks, quick take out meals (i.e. Salad rolls, banh cuon, spring rolls), order at the counter meals (i.e. Banh mi, pho) and then Asian drinks to go (i.e. Iced Vietnamese coffee, bubble tea). Basically, it's a one stop Vietnamese yum yum food shop. It definitely had a small family owned vibe.
My immediate response upon entering Marche Hung Phat was that I wanted to eat and try everything! I ended up picking up some vegetarian spring rolls, banh cuon, 2 banh mi subs and 2 Vietnamese coffees. I really loved that Marche Hung Phat had vegetarian options - spring rolls and 2 different types for banh mi subs. The gentleman at the counter was helpful and friendly and lady behind the counter was quick to make our subs.
Since the shop is small and is set up partly as a convenience store, there are no tables or dine in spots (at least not that I noticed). We ended up eating back at our hotel and the banh mi's certainly didn't disappoint. The buns were fresh and the subs were delicious, same with the rolls and the banh cuon.
If you're in the area and need a Vietnamese food fix, please stop by and check out this great...
Read morePossibly the best Vietnamese sub in Montreal. However, this is like winning the special Olympics.
I have two big problems. First is the microwave, they go through enough volume to keep hot items in a heated tray, short of that, a rice cooker set to warm. But no, I have to watch part of my sandwich come out of a fridge, and get microwaved to an edible temperature before being stuffing in an untoasted baguette to be served.
Which brings me to the second problem. The bread should be toasted BY DEFAULT! Not only does it create the crunchy exterior and soft interior for contrast, toasting also melts the liver pate or Vietnamese mayo, which improves the entire sub.
Throw away the microwave, and in its place, get a conveyor toaster and a cheap rice cooker, and this place may become the second best viet sub in Canada.
Edit: why can't you bring it home and toast yourselves... Duh! No! Then the cilantro is wilted, cucumber becomes limp, and pickled carrots ends up...
