We had a group of 16 visiting Montreal. We visited the Jean-Talon market and wanted some good homecooked Vietnamese food. My husband's cousin lives in Montreal and said he wanted to try Pho Jean-Talon. So, off we went!
The owners welcomed our group and was able to seat us quickly. The owners are very friendly and answered our questions about the menu.
The group had various dietary restrictions (vegetarian, do not eat beef, do not eat cilantro) and the owners were able to accommodate each request without any issues. We ordered the spring rolls, fried wontons, pho filet mignon, pho dac biet, bun bo hue (spicy soup with beef shank), and pho rau cai dau hu (vegetarian fried tofu and vegetable soup). The portion size for each dish is very generous. The food was delicious. Everyone finished their meals and gave a thumbs up. It is not always easy to satisfy everyone in a big group.
I ordered the bun bo hue (spicy soup with beef shank) and the soup delivered on the spice level and flavor. I do not like cilantro. The owner made sure it was omitted from my dish. It was the perfect meal for a rainy day.
If you are in the area, go to Pho Jean-Talon restaurant. You will not be disappointed. The restaurant has a card that will give you a free bowl of pho for every 10 bowls you purchase. This is a bonus. We will dine at this restaurant when we visit my husband's...
Read moreSecond time eating here: previously enjoyed their pho and this time we had grilled beef and pork over vermicelli. The food is good, the service was a bit unequal. The young man who first served us did not do much of a follow-up once the food was served. Water glasses remained empty for quite a while, and when we were clearly finished and just waiting, we had to finally signal to the woman server in order to get doggy bags. Watch out for the additional fee if you want to take home any food you don't finish! Although I rarely experience this at other restaurants, here they charge $1.50 per person to take home any leftovers. I don't mind paying a small charge to cover the cost of the take-home box, but $1.50 felt excessive. I checked at Costco and the take-home containers cost $.25 a piece. It's a bit cheeky to make a profit off of the doggy bags when already the prices are a bit higher than other Vietnamese restaurants of similar quality in the neighborhood. I'd hesitate before going back since there are so many other options for good Vietnamese food in the neighborhood, and without the...
Read moreVery good pho place. Friendly staffs and clean place. What I tried : Pho Dat Biet with Filet Mignon Grilled Beef served with rice and salad.
The Pho was tasty and hearty. I really liked the broth and it tasted even better with a little bit of Hoisin Sauce and Sriracha. I asked for Filet Mignon instead of the usual beef and even though it tasted good and the meat was soft, I could stick with the usual Pho Dac Biet beef. If you feel fancy, you could totally add the Filet Mignon, but you'll still be satisfied with the usual Pho bowl.
The seasoning on the grilled beef was really amazing! I went during lunch time for there was a possibility to get a combo with the imperial roll (which was amazginly good).
Overall, this place is a nice revamp and it's really worth the try. It's really close to the metro and the Jean-Talon market, where you can take a walk there after your hearty meal. I was happy...
