2 years ago, I visited Montreal and had dinner 2 nights in a row at Restaurant Bonaparte. 2 years after, I visit Montreal again, and dinner at Restaurant Bonaparte again. The reason I come back again is not only their attentive service, but also duck breast and chocolate chip souffle. Came this time in a group of 4, ordered 2 lobster bisque, vanilla flavored shrimp and scallop, prosciutto and cantaloupe to start. Then lamb shrank, duck breast, lobster stew and beef filet for main courses. Finished up with chocolate chip souffle. Price certainly goes up quite a bit, but quality still remain the same, which is "amazing". $420 for 4 people included taxes and tips are certainly not expensive at all for the environment, service and WOW food quality that Restaurant Bonaparte provides for the night! If I will go to Montreal again in the future, it will be my must go dining place again.
Located in the old port of Montreal, Restaurant Bonaparte is one of the best French cuisine rated by yelpers. The environment is very French inspired, and the waiter is very attentive and polite. The waiter introduced both tasting menu, one is 4 courses menu and then other is 7 courses menu. I pick the 7 courses menu including the Souffle dessert. With the price of $86, I believe it is a very good deal because it is way cheaper than Toronto. I start with Lobster Bisque, then smoke salmon appetizer, coming to the third course is the shrimp and scallop with vanilla sauce, then I have the pear sorbet to clean my mouth, the main course is the duck breast, and finally finished with chocolate chip Souffle with tea or coffee or hot lemon water. I did ordered another seafood and fish linguine, and it is not than enough for 2 of us. All the courses are great, but the most memorable one that stand out is the duck breast, the sauce is so tasty and the duck is so tender. I did tell the waiter that it is the best duck breast I ever had, much better than the ones in Toronto. The only thing is the seafood and fish linguine lacks a bit sauce and flavor. I would definitely recommend anyone at Montreal should have dinner at least once in...
Read moreOverall, the food is very standard and quality or even maybe lower than regular restaurant and not worth the price.
Lobster bisque: standard soup. Not bad but not good.
Duck foie gras: the combination of the ingredient does not help to enhance the flavour. The duck foie gras instead of regular foie gras can tell you they try to cheap out.
Smoke salmon: random ingredient combination. Basically pieces of salmon with some vegetable.
Shrimp and scollop: wonderful shrimp taste, but a bit over cooked scollop. I think their plate is way hot for this dish. The seafood fish does not need this.
Rabbit conflict: prob one of the best one. Like the pastry texture. But again, same salad on the side.
Sober: like this part of the menu. Nevertheless, wish the sparking wine is actually a bit more fizz. It would bring up the taste more.
Lamb rack: horrible. The lamb quality is ordinary. The potato is not cooked thorough. All the vegetable have nothing to do with lamb flavour. The sauce is super thick, like syrup as shown in the last picture.
Filet mignon: initially ordered medium rare, but turns out to be medium to well done. We asked for the redone. The second piece is amazing. The best dish of the night. The meat is soft and tender, well balenced favor. Again, uncooked potato.
Desert: the desert make me feel like this restaurant wants to give quantity than quality. Every single one taste like something u can get from random grocery shop. I couldn’t finish any of the three.
Service: the waitress was nice. But I think the management was not good. We sit down for 10 mins without anyone coming up to us or offer water.
Taste menu: no creation at all. That’s maybe the reason why their service do not even need to introduce or explain the dish ar all. It is my first time ever having a tasting menu and can visually see the simple combination of the ingredient which does not require explanation.
Nice location for the restaurant, I guess some fees goes to...
Read moreWe’ve been going to Bonaparte for years for special occasions. This will absolutely be our last visit,. This experience was absolutely atrocious. After waiting an hour for the first course is was somehow downhill afterwards. To start, the prices were different for the Christmas Eve coursed menu in person than they were online. Yes, it was only a $10 difference on the wine, but seems somewhat unethical to advertise something and change it in person. The course that we waited one hour for was soup and a salad. Each course the wine paring was delivered to the table at least 30 minutes before the course reached the table. The wine was not poured at the table, but rather brought to the table prepoured without seeming the bottles. The courses were subpar and bland with almost an hour between courses. When the mains finally arrived, the steak was a subpar cut that was overdone and chewy. My partner was literally sawing thru the steak. I ordered the Dover sole meunière which was flavorless and NOT meunière. We picked this location for Christmas Eve BECAUSE of my love for Dover sole meunière, so needless to say I was completely disappointed to see that it was not prepared as described. This was misleading and frustrating, almost as if they thought the customer would not know what to expect from a Dover sole meunière. We left without consuming the dessert course and its wine . The experience was so horrific that we just needed to get out of there at any cost. In the end, we were not charged for one of our tasting menus which was the bare minimum they could have done. We’ve been going to this restaurant for years and are sadden to know that this was our last experience and last time eating at what was one of our favorite restaurants...
