10/5 stars. This place is sheer perfection from the second you walk in - the interior design and high ceilings in this place will make you gawk. They also have a bit of cute merch and other small pottery items for sale. The service is 500/10 - the staff is helpful, really kind, and they are so meticulous in how they prepare the dish, I was truly shocked when the food showed up at our table. I thought it was more of an order at the counter and then go to eat place, but surprisingly, the girl working did it all - brought us our beer, food, etc. The dishware and glassware are also stunning - I think some of it was sourced from Zone nearby in case you also contemplated shoving dishes into your bag like me! The food itself was insane, we were aggressively full from the portion, and the toppings were really generous. The fish was surprisingly very fresh and can honestly say it’s the best poké I’ve found in Montreal to date. « C’est nul d’aller manger seul. »

C’est la pensée qui me revient chaque dimanche, après le service à l’église. D’ordinaire, dimanche rime avec communion et repas entre amis, mais notre petit cercle de gastronomes traverse une zone de turbulence : la vie de chacun évolue, et les sorties se font plus rares, à mon grand regret.

« C’est vraiment nul d’aller manger seul. » Ou plutôt — pour être juste — c’est fade de découvrir un nouvel endroit sans compagnie. Car pour moi, la joie se décuple lorsqu’elle est partagée. Même dans un cas comme aujourd’hui, où, au volant, je me suis spontanément arrêté à un lieu qui n’était pas dans ma liste « à visiter » : Le Krood du Canal.

Cependant, en admirant le décor aérien, gracieux comme une danse orientale, je me suis dit qu’A. l’aurait trouvé superbe. En savourant mon poke Sunny Saum (22 $) — excellent, notamment grâce à la fraîcheur des aliments, au saumon fondant, à la vive mayo épicée, à la sauce teriyaki et à la touche croustillante de ramen — je me suis souvenu de ma première sortie poke avec K. dans un établissement qui se voulait trop « tendance ». K., qui avait adoré son bol, était aux anges. « K. aurait sûrement aimé cet endroit. »

En somme, manger seul crée une impression de vide. Être en bonne compagnie rend l’ambiance plus charmante, la nourriture plus mémorable. Le service a beau être attentionné (on vous apporte verre d’eau glacée et bol à table, on vient s’assurer que tout va bien), l’absence de conversation amicale résonne comme un écho. Je regrette presque d’avoir découvert le Krood en solitaire, mais je crains que, pour un certain temps, cela devienne ma nouvelle réalité.

Quoi qu’il en soit, amateurs de poke ou non-initiés, le Krood, en affaires depuis quatre ans, sait tirer son épingle du jeu grâce à la qualité de son offre (dont de nombreuses options végétariennes), son emplacement privilégié pas trop loin du canal, son service chaleureux et ses prix raisonnables considérant la générosité des portions. Je songe à dresser prochainement une liste des bons restaurants autour de l’église et celui-ci devrait certainement y figurer. Ma foi, si mon récit incitait ne serait-ce qu’une personne à savourer cet endroit, j’en serais comblé, même...
