We had been wanting to try this restaurant out for a long time. Waiter came and was friendly. I ordered the Dibi which was supposed to be roasted lamb which I understood to include a choice of different rice and sauces. It came and was basically mostly chopped up bones with dried up meat. It came with onions and no sauce. The most expensive and unsatisfying lamb dish I have ever had. My partner ordered fish dumplings. Well they came deep fried like egg roll skins but the inside had some sort of darkish fish which didn’t taste of fish at all. Perhaps it was mushed up sardines with super spicy sauce to disguise the substandard filling. She also ordered a veg dish with white rice and fried plantains. Well the “veg” which is the namesake of the dish amounted to a few carrots and root vegetables in caramelized onions. It was ok but for heavens sake the portion was about 2 oz of vegetables in a tiny little sauce container. The rice was decent but the plantains were fried till brown and soaked with oil. I suspect the fryer oil was too low a temperature. I couldn’t even eat them. I had fried plantain chips that were thin, lightly fried golden and just heavenly elsewhere. This dish should be brimming with vegetables with the plantains done with more care and as a garnish, not the main feature. As you can tell I was not happy with the product served and it came to $70! I let the waiter know my concerns especially with the Dibi. I told him it was dry and overcooked and more bones than meat. Also that I thought it came with vegetable accompaniment which it did not for $30. Come in this is not a high end steakhouse! The rice apparently had to be ordered separately at around $6 if I recall … like really? Menu is confusing and does not describe the dishes well so you really don’t know what you are getting.
However the chef and the waiter did their best to appease us and make good on our bad experience so packed us leftovers with extra meat and the rice I was originally expecting. The meat was moist and without bones, it could have been beef. Also received some chicken also very good and moist! Both meats had very flavourful sauce/liquid. The flavoured rice was good but overwhelming for me but my partner really liked it. The positive attitude of the waiter in the end helped smooth out my bitter experience a bit.
I would NOT recommend this restaurant despite their good intentioned efforts to make good on a lousy meal. They were nice but in the end $70 was way too much for what was served and the menu description is not helpful at all. If you look at all the picture people have posted the food looks juicy and well presented. But that’s not...
Read moreThe food is delicious. However, the owner of the restaurant (bald, tall guy) is extremely rude. I was in the area and found his restaurant as I was passing by. The door was closed, so I assumed the restaurant was closed. I saw him in the restaurant, and he looked at me but he didn’t flinch.
Fine. I walked away, and I looked the restaurant up on Google Maps as I thought I should try to go back when it’s open. As per Google Maps, the restaurant was already opened, so I thought maybe Google didn’t have the most up-to-date schedule. I called the restaurant, and I asked if the restaurant would be open right now. He answered condescendingly, "Yes, as you can see on Google" I was awed, but I let it go as not everybody has customer service skills.
I walked back to the restaurant. I entered for the first time. I sat at the little table that’s right at the entrance, since I was only 1 person. He came by and told me rudely "That table is for UberEats orders" and gave me a DIRTY look. I apologized to him, and explained him that I wasn’t aware. I sat at another table. He serviced me very rustically and cold. At some point, he even PICKED his nose in front of me, and swallowing noisily his phlegm. I was worried because he was the only cook that day.
A group of 4 young women came in to order, and his attitude was completely different. He was nice and welcoming, telling them he usually don’t open on Tuesdays, but given the circumstances he opened that day.
My order was really good, a bit expensive as African food usually is. He didn’t pay attention to me the whole time I was eating. When the time came to pay for me, all of the sudden he was smiling, asking me if I enjoyed the food. I found his attitude very hypocrite. I gave him tip as a gesture of appreciation for the food I got served.
However, I do not intend to go back just because of his attitude. Unprofessional, rude, nasty, seems to favour a certain type of customers, and turns conveniently nice when it’s time to pay. I DO NOT recommend...
Read moreFirstly let me tell you I was super excited to try my first senegalese restaurant here in Montreal, since moving here from New York, when we got there the atmosphere was nice the restaurant was clean and proper. We were the first ones there aside from another pair who had finished eating. The waitress was very warm and welcoming, we took our orders immediately we knew what we wanted already. My husband ordered the ginger drink and he took one sip and did not like it at all, but we weren’t going to let that deter our dinner. We ordered the dibi and chicken with the thiepu yapp (I hope I’m spelling it right) with plantain. We waited for our food which took a little long to come but that meant it would be good, atleast I hoped, but when the food came the thiepu yapp tasted like it was burned and a portion of our meat was burned as well. I barely touched my rice because I was turned off by the taste, the chicken and dibi were not bad I just wish it was not burned. I believe in second chances and just because of the hospitality which was a 4/5 I would probably go there again, but for the food I would give it a 3/5.
PS: To the owner thank you for writing back so promptly, but I wasn’t there last weekend and when I went there it was not busy at all, nothing is perfect in fact which is why I always give the benefit of doubt and I am willing to try it again...
