Group of 4 out for dinner.
The good: Drinks were well made Food in general was tasty Fish is very fresh Calm environment with nice city views Waiter was attentive
The bad:
Layout is a bit awkward Our table was next to the bathrooms. There was a lineup at one point and we had ppl standing right next to our table while the rest of the restaurant was virtually empty. Speaking of the bathroom, it was filthy. Maki rolls were not well made. Kept falling apart when picking them up. Wasabi was a $5 extra per order. This is insane. They’re serving sashimi and you have to pay for the wasabi?! It wasn’t even a generous portion either, maybe half a teaspoon. It’s crazy to charge for this most basic thing for sashimi. Ponzu sauce for the sushi? Seriously? Even then we had to ask for more because they only brought one small dish with maybe one teaspoon of it for all four of us. They need to talk to their wait staff about wearing cologne/perfume. Waiter wore way too much and you could virtually taste it in the air when he was around. Menu is very short and limited. We ordered maybe 70% of the menu.
Would we come back? More than likely not. Just the fact that they are charging for the wasabi on a sashimi platter shows they have no understanding of Japanese cuisine and the role wasabi plays in it. They need to re-evaluate...
Read moreThis is a pseudo-Japanese restaurant owned and run by some Canadians who might not have even been to Japan, in spite of its name and deco. I did not see a single Asian face on the staff. This probably should tell you how genuine their Japanese food is. The food came with nice decorations in small portions but did not taste Japanese, without even being accompanied by wasabi and soya sauce. When we requested these condiments, the waiter asked for 5$ for a ¼ pea-sized portion of wasabi and another $5 for some ginger. Funny. The restaurant should really be called a bar because most customers (10 or so) there were just having a drink. They were probably working in the building and had a happy hour after work. Only 3-4 tables of guests were dinner guests. 90% of the tables were empty all evening. Some rather loud music was playing; this was annoying, as we just wanted a quiet dinner and to have some conversation. Although, in theory, on the 45th floor above, we should have a nice view of Mont Royal and St. Laurent River, the view was spoiled by construction cranes nearby and by the ugly white roofs of the building next to 1 Place Ville-Marie. It is a total disappointment for us. Those positive reviews were probably written by the owner’s friends, by companies doing it for a profit, or even by AI. In all fairness, the service was good, and the waiters...
Read moreMy recent visit to Sora 45 left me with mixed feelings and a general sense of dissatisfaction. Upon arrival, I was immediately struck by the extremely limited menu, with only 3-4 plates available for selection. To make matters worse, they were out of salmon, further restricting our choices.
The disappointment didn't end there; the service fell short when one of the plates we ordered was no longer available, yet it remained on the bill. Despite bringing this to the attention of the staff, the issue was not promptly addressed, and the plate was not removed from our final total.
When seeking a resolution, the manager offered a somewhat lackluster solution—a promise of two glasses of champagne on our next visit. Unfortunately, this gesture does little to rectify the shortcomings of our current experience, and it certainly does not incentivize a return visit, especially considering the limited menu and lack of available dishes during our initial encounter.
While I appreciate the effort to make amends, the overall dining experience at Sora 45 was far from satisfactory. The combination of a sparse menu, unavailability of key dishes, and a less-than-adequate resolution to billing discrepancies leaves me with little desire to revisit this establishment in the future. I hope this feedback encourages improvements for...
