I wanted to love this place. Recommended to me by a British chap who insisted it was the best fish n' chips he's had since he moved away from the UK years ago. Convinced my wife and kids and my retired parents to go one evening. So we get there. It's a cute restaurant. There's a whole seating area that's a bus. The staff were absolutely amazing and super friendly. Answered all my questions. Off to a great start. Unfortunately one of our party was vegan and there's nothing she can have on the menu as everything is cooked in beef tallow which is amazing but bad for the vegans. Also, one of the kids was celiac and sadly doesn't like fish so her options were really limited, but that's on us to have researched better.
Now as for the food. This is where things started to go a bit downhill. When you're expecting the best fish n chips in town and you receive what I felt were just standard fish n chips, it was a surprise. I am not an expert on fish n chips but maybe we came at a busy time, several large orders ahead of us and all our fried things (particularly the fish n chips) were greasy and soggy, like when I fry at home and don't get the oil temperature right. Nothing was crispy and soaked up a lot of beef tallow. A good fish n' chips, for me anyways, has to be crispy and this missed the mark.
We decided to save a good portion of our meal so we could take it home and blast them in the air fryer for 10-15 minutes, just to crisp everything up and remove some of that grease and great news it totally worked!! Turned all the fish and chips into super crispy, not greasy, top notch fish and chips and I was happy.
Overall, for me probably won't be back but kudos to the amazing staff and it was nice to see a newer local restaurant so busy.
Edit after owners response: This business cares about their customers and their reputation and responded within hours of my review and explained things beautifully. I will concede that I had no idea there was such a thing as "North American" fish n chips and next time (and there will be a next time) I will ask for the double fry. As for mentioning it in shop at the time, the front area is quite public and mentioning our concerns in front of many people just didn't feel comfortable and since our plan was to just enjoy the rest at home after a good air fry, which we did, we were happy. But I appreciate the sentiment and could have mentioned something discreetly or something. I know your amazing staff would have been more than accommodating. Cheers and I will be back for the North...
Read moreMoving from England to Edmonton, one thing I really missed was proper fish and chips the kind you get fresh by the seaside. For years, I searched for that authentic taste, but nothing quite matched up until I found Lawson’s Fish and Chips. From the moment I took my first bite, I was instantly transported back to those carefree days walking along the pier in Brighton and the beaches of Margate, enjoying the salty sea air and the classic British comfort food that feels like home.
Lawson’s nails it perfectly the fish is beautifully flaky inside, wrapped in a golden, crispy batter that’s light and not greasy at all. The chips are spot on, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, just like I remember. It’s clear that a lot of care and expertise goes into every meal here. The shrimp and cod were a huge hit with my kids, who were just as excited as I was.
What really makes Lawson’s stand out, beyond the fantastic food, is the warmth and genuine friendliness of the owners and staff. They go out of their way to give you that British welcome, like you’re part of a community. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to come back again and again not just for the food but for the whole experience.
If you’re craving amazing food with that authentic British touch and a little taste of nostalgia Lawson’s is absolutely the place to go. Finding real fish and chips outside the UK can be tough, but Lawson’s has set a new standard here in Edmonton. I’m already counting down the days until...
Read moreWe stumbled onto Lawson’s in west Edmonton, it looked busy so we tried it out. They just opened Aug 2024, it has a British Invasion vibe with posters of the Classic Rock era mega groups: the Beatles, the Who, Pink Floyd etc, one washroom has a Dr. Who theme. After you enter, you place your order at the counter for either eat in or takeout. The menu is posted above the counter, and covers a complete range of Brit fish and chips fare. Check it out on line. We each ordered the Haddock Fillet and Chips. It is a seat yourself arrangement, and although very busy we got a table for 2 almost immediately. The staff quickly clear and clean tables as they become vacant. It is a bit crowded in the seating area with one dead end aisle of tables set up like a bus, that requires people to wait while others move out of the way. Not a place to go with a large group or to have a party. Staff delivered our order to the table along with cutlery and napkins. The regular order size was plenty of food. The haddock was done perfectly, flakey, white and no unpleasant fishy smell or taste? The batter was crispy, cooked through and not oily. The chips were more in the nature of thick cut fries, but they were perfectly done. Cost was under $40.00 with soft drinks. They also had beer and canned mixed drinks. We will go back to try...
