Original (2024): I first discovered Basil Box in Toronto but loved that they had a location in Oakville near my favourite art shop. I love the option to build your own box, especially since I'm vegetarian. Love the Coconut Curry tofu with Jasmine or Brown rice, assorted veggies, Peanut Sauce, assorted toppings, and a bit of spice. Especially enjoy the Sweet Chili Mayo on top. Have also tried the Coconut Curry Bao which were fantastic except for the cilantro. I do wish that there were more options to try.
Edit (July 31, 2025): Why change the packaging for the build a box? Was told this change happened a couple of weeks ago. I get it's a larger box, but still, why not a larger box or diverse sizes in the old style (foldable coated cardboard). Instead of the foldable (wax?) coated cardboard, it's now a cheap composite material like the drink trays from Tim Hortons with a plastic lid that doesn't close very well. The plastic lid then has a basil box sticker added which comes off pretty easily. Cheaper costs associated with packaging? The food sticks to the new container and doesn't want to let go. If you manage to unstick the food (e.g., rice), the inner paper of the packaging comes off attached to the food, especially if the food has time to chill a bit. Also if there is a liquid of any sort in the container, it will go through. In my case it was the coconut curry (fantastic) that went through the packing and onto/through the to go paper bag. Luckily I had a reusable bag I had that I put it in, otherwise, the yellow liquid would have stained either my clothes or car. Portions are now quite a bit larger as a result of the packaging. For the build your own box, the rice portion was huge (easily 2/3 of the container. After putting the tofu, veggies, sauce, and toppings, the employee had to shove the lid on and squueze all the food in. Way too much rice for one build your box. The staff seemed pleasant. Good food though, wish there were more diverse (including vegan and vegetarian) options to try and that they kept the...

Read moreWe have gone a few times now to this location and we have both really enjoyed it.
Another reviewer complained about the price not being shown; and I'll admit that I didn't see it right away either. I just asked and they pointed it out to me. (I'm not sure why the other guy didn't just ask as well).
The staff were very friendly, courteous, and helpful. Because I'd never been before, I asked for their recommendations. They let me split my protein half of one and half of another. And the sauce mix they suggested was peanut and chili lime I think. It was very tasty. Also, fresh chilis give a nice kick.
IMO, the portions are a good size. I think that any more than what they served me would've been too much. It is a good balance of protein, carb, and veggies. If I wanted more of anything, it would probably be veggies (and i'm sure they would add more if I asked).
As well, even though it's an assembly line, you can see they are regularly cooking and prepping new batches to keep the food in the line fresh. (Ie - no old meat or veg)
I highly recommend this place for the good, simple and wholesome food; the friendly and quick service; and the ambiance of the space.
