I don't usually bother writing reviews but Hanabi deserves it, especially after doing right by me today (long story, they mistakenly added sashimi to my order, but refunded it when I brought my receipt back).
Ordered from several times, always well prepared and fairly priced - liked it more than Genji, actually, which I thought was kind of the best in Ottawa.
Ordered takeout on a Friday (COVID), and hopped in the car and went to my friend's place. When I arrived 30 mins later (they live way out of the city), we noticed there was a second serving of sashimi, and I checked the receipt - a combo was added to the order that I didn't request. I called them at the start of the week, and after a little confusion, they asked me if I had the receipt (I did) and if I could come in.
When I got there a lady helped me, and although a gentleman came out with his arms crossed, asking me "where the sashimi was" and if I ate it (I left it at my friend's place; was I supposed to hang onto it for 3-4 days in case you wanted it back...?), the lady politely shooed him into the back and refunded the cost of the sashimi - even calculated the tax.
So, although I got some pushback - I understand, restaurants are tough business, even more so nowadays - they did right by me and continue to serve great sushi. I'll be ordering from here again.
Just double check your takeout order before you leave the...
ย ย ย Read moreA well serviced Japanese restaurant on Bank Street. I thought the food was good but not great.. I went there for lunch and ordered a salmon teriyaki Bento box. The meal began with a miso soup which could have been warmer (though my colleague found it perfect). The Bento itself looked appetising with a very juicy and fresh salad, a (very) small salmon teriyaki steak, a bowl of rice and an optional item. The optional item being either a set of maki rolls, veg dumplings and another one that I cannot remember. The salad was the best of the lot, the rice also..well rice. The salmon left me wanting more flavour (but maybe that's my inexperience with Japanese food in general) and lastly the dumplings. I had requested for the dumplings to be steamed rather than deep fried as is the default. Staemed was not possible so I settled for a pan fried version.. what I got had a good filling but undercooked dough. Left me with an unsavoury taste, something not recommended. Apart from that I would revisit and try the other food on the menu. Good service, pleasant staff.. Torn between a 3 and a 4 star... Maybe somewhere in between with a revised review...
ย ย ย Read moreCame here with a friend, tried the "Tenderous Rib Ramen", and the dynamite maki rolls.
The maki rolls were actually quite good, we both thoroughly enjoyed them.
The ramen on the other hand wasn't very good. The noodles were okay, the broth was average at best, and the egg was closer to hard boiled, so it was overcooked. The ribs (3 of them) came still on the bone, sitting in the soup. I had expected just rib meat, not full rib bones in my soup. Trying to eat ribs with chopsticks alone is very difficult, and no side plate was brought for the bones when I was done either. The soup spoon to eat the broth was more like a ladle than a spoon, and while it looked nice, it was far from functional for actually eating the dish.
They provided us with an alcohol menu, which when we tried to order off it, we were told they didn't have a liquor license yet. Probably best to just not give us that menu at all, then, or mention it up front when giving us the menus.
Overall, I definitely wouldn't come back.
Another person mentioned the free appetizer promo. I just want to note this promo was not offered or mentioned to us, and we were there Saturday,...
