Anywhere I travel I like to support the local places. I was on a road trip to Bancroft with my friend and decided to drop in to pick up something for lunch on the road. We picked up a couple of Cheddar Scones, White Sourdough Bread, and a Chocolate Chip Cookie. My friend also bought a bag of Rapids End coffee beans. We ate the scones on the drive up. They were great but my friend’s scone was underbaked, gooey in the center so she couldn’t finish hers. Mine was just a tad underbaked. We stopped in a grocery store to buy some cheese and Italian cured meats and looked for a park to have our lunch. We had a wonderful and satisfying lunch. The crumb on the sourdough loaf was good and it smelled and tasted awesome. The cookie was delicious too but much too sweet for my friend (she doesn’t have a sweet tooth like I do).

Oh my word, we are on the final leg of our North American tour travelling East to West. We've stopped at quite a few great bakeries in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Quebec. Hard Winter Bakery beats them all. The bread is so fantastic. The perfect crispy crust with fluffy soft interior with a light sourness, it is sourdough after all. We also bought a cheesecake slice and an orange and cardamom morning bun and both were wonderful as part of our breakfast. We have a raisin and cinnamon loaf for tomorrow. Hopefully they'll have a store every 200 km to Vancouver and then one near our house in the UK. Just finished the raisin and cinnamon and it is the best we've had so far in North America.

The best bakery in Peterborough and one of the best in Kawartha Region. Brownie , Banana loaf, Croissants and Cookies are my favourites. Cameron and other staff members are awesome and we feel welcomed at the store, parking is limited on the road. Store usually opens around 8 am and most of the famous bakery items gets over by around 12pm. if you want to try all the favourites please come before 11am as its a fast selling shop. the bread schedule card attached with my review , i have also attached preorder card for Easter Carrot cakes which are extremely delicious and amazing . thank you hard winter bakery team for the good work

I love, love their bread. It costs $6.50 a loaf, but the taste is totally worth it.

HOWEVER, what I have issue with is that if you pay by credit or debit, you have to DECLINE giving a tip. A very expensive loaf of bread plus extra 'tips". What is this world coming to?

Seriously, when someone hands you a loaf of bread, which takes ten seconds, or even if you have to ask to have it sliced, which might take a minute or two more, you are asked to tip. A bakery is basically equivalent to a grocery store.

If this bakery is charging so much for one loaf of white or whole wheat bread, even in this world of incredibly rising prices, they should be paying their employees 'living wages' and not trying to download extra costs onto consumers,...
