Port Moody has the most amazing new Mexican restaurant, Sabor A Mexico.
Went tonight with my husband and 2 teens to belatedly celebrate my birthday. š As soon as we walked in the door we were greeted with smiles and a warm welcome, which was amped up even more when we realized our now 17 year old played soccer with the ownerās son about 11 years ago! (So I can tell you that the owners are a delightful local family and just lovely people, and the husband is from Mexico, and the recipes used are authentic/ family recipes.) We ended up seated next to the chef who was off shift, and she held our hands all night - making recommendations and chatting with us about the flan being her grandmothers recipe.
It was by far the best dining experience and food I have enjoyed in Port Moody in some time. (Quick note on the decor- bright and fun with photos of Mexico taken by friends of the owners, charming streamers along the ceiling brought to the owners by friends from Mexico, I believe, cute brickwork, cozy seating, bright colours, nice music which the staff occasionally could be heard singing to⦠Adorable, fun, joyful.)
We had:
Chips - freshly made and served with a nicely spiced dip
Ceviche (probably the best I have ever had!) - again served with chips (didnāt think to take a pic until we ate it all, but I wanted to drink what was left in the dish at that point!)
Chicken Fajitas - served with rice, beans, guacamole, a green spicier sauce (delicious!), and warm wraps.
Pork Burrito - my son loved it
Birria Mazatland Style - a fabulous beef stew
Quesabirria- fried tacos with cheese and birria and a side of dip (this will be my go to snack food here)
Carne Asada Plate - husband loved it
Churros and ice cream with caramel sauce
Flan - the chefs Abuelaās recipe - and a sensational stand alone treat (I got distracted so didnāt take a pic until we had all had a nibble š)
Plus Drinks: A Paloma A grapefruit margarita Horchata Pop
We are almost every last crumb and weāre so stuffed but in such a satisfied and happy way. We canāt wait to go back and try the chorizo (or vegan chorizo) that they make in house, or to try pretty much anything on their...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreHaving some Mexican background, I am always curious to try Mexican restaurants to see where is the most authentic / closest in taste and ability to what I am used to.
The service was very good. Originally a bit of a wait since we didnāt have a reservation, but the host walked out 5 minutes later and knocked on our car door in the rain to let us know they had a cancellation and could seat us right away. Our server was very attentive, though it did start to feel like we were rushed (maybe they had other reservations coming in and didnāt want us to overstay).
We ordered the Spicy Margarita and the Mexican Mule to start since the drink reviews were strong. Was very nice to see the tequila options were good and they werenāt just using Sauza. We both asked for Maestro Dobel tequila with our drinks and they didnāt disappoint.
We started with chips and salsa because I always measure quality and authenticity based on the quality of the in-house salsa. The flavour was okay, but likely would be better if it had sat for a bit to allow the flavours to seep throughout. Most of the chips were stale, which didnāt help.
Then tried the queso fundido which was disappointing. Seemed to be mozzarella cheese with no added flavour and ok chorizo.
Then we shared the enchiladas with salsa verde. The shredded chicken lacked flavour and there was feta cheese on top (Greek cheese, not Mexican).
To anyone elseās standards this would be good quality, however I readily admit my standards are high. The best Mexican food I have found so far in BC is 4 hours away. I will continue to search the lower mainland, but would definitely return...

Featured here: Horchata Queso Fundido Vegan Tacos Churros Mexicanos
Our friend was the one who ordered the Vegan Tacos. Cactus is supposed to be the filling according to the menu. Not having any experience with eating cactus, she had troubles detecting which flavor or texture was cactus. She said she enjoyed the tacos though, and she's normally a meat eater. It was just for this particular meal that she decided to choose something plant based.
My daughter and I had just had Queso Fundido at a different restaurant recently. We were quite happy with that Queso Fundido but this one was even better. The cheese was soooo ooey and gooey! Queso Fundido has now replaced cheese quesadilla as my picky eater's favourite Mexican food.
Not too long ago I had some very poorly done churros at another restaurant. These churros from Sabor A Mexico totally made up for that disappointment. The churros here were fresh and piping hot. It was accompanied by a delicious caramel dip and there was an option of adding ice cream to it. We very happily opted for this option!
If you like Mexican food, Sabor A Mexico is an absolute gem and I highly recommend this place!
