We were lucky enough to win a giveaway from Kou sushi so we came to claim our lovely prize - chirashi don, and checked out this new sushi place at Times Square at Hwy 7 / Leslie!
While waiting for our donburi, I have decided to check out what the have to offer. The shop has a few tables set up for dine in, a self-serving water/ tea area set up at the bag with a few tea choices to pick up - oolong, green tea, pu'er. They also have a mini fridge where you can purchase some good quality sashimi to add to your meal to-go!
Our donburi comes with a complimentary salad and miso soup. We have also decided to add their signature roll- kou maki, together with this experience. The donburi was brought to our table. Upon first glance, the assorted sashimi pieces were placed nicely on the rice bowl (picture worthy!) and the maki roll was brought to us shortly after. The sashimi were quite fresh in taste; the tuna didn't have that signature iron / bloody taste, and salmon was fatty and rich. The sushi rice was cooked perfectly with a little chew to it, they also sprinkled a small layer of white sesame on the rice. The signature roll was smaller than I expected- each pieces were bite sized. The roll contained spicy scallop, mango, slightly cooked/ torched tobiko, avocado, and torched salmon on top. Each bite was fun to have as you have the sweetness from the mango and the pop from biting into the tobiko. However, I didn't like it as much because there was a "watery" feel after each bite.
Overall, I do not mind ordering from this place again. However, the only con about this place was really the size of their maki roll for the price...
Read moreI think there’s something wrong with the way they store their tuna fish or maybe fish in general. I’ve gone twice and gotten an assortment of sushi each time(sashimi, sushi, maki) The first time having the tuna sashimi, I noticed a heavy metallic flavor and the tuna sashimi was pretty bloody so I only ate 1 piece and left the other 2 pieces. After eating there was a little tingle in the tongue but it quickly went away and I thought nothing of it. This time I went and got a different combo but with kinda the same stuff. I got given an extra tuna sushi by a friend and since the tuna didn’t look too bad, I ate it. No bloody taste this time so I thought it was ok. After leaving I realized that my tongue started to feel numb and my throat is a little itchy. It’s been a couple hours and it hasn’t gone down. I’ve looked at cause for symptoms and the only thing that really made sense in my scenario was scombroid fish poisoning. Usually affecting fish like tuna when it’s not being refrigerated properly. Which really added up from the previous experience with the bloody tasting tuna. If the tuna is like this then I’m hoping they’re keeping the rest of the fish under the right...
Read moreI want to be positive about this spot but it is a place I will never recommend or go to ever again! Waste of your money and quality is very bad.
Initially I thought this place looked pretty good based on the reviews I read and prices were not bad so we ordered takeout. Keep in mind you pay cash, there’s 10% discount. There’s a small dine-in section and around 6:30pm it wasn’t very busy either.
We ordered the Sashimi, Sushi and Maki platter B (65.00$) and we waited about 20 minutes for order to be ready.
We tried the platter and based on appearance alone the fish was not fresh. In other words, it was ‘freshly frozen’. Quality was very disappointing and rice was over cooked it became mushy. Overall, food was a huge disappointment and a waste of our money due to their lack of care in preparing the ingredients.
I highly recommend to not try this place out because there are definitely quality sushi spots around the area at a similar price point. Furthermore, not long after eating; our stomach started to hurt and ended up with food poisoning. Avoid this spot...
