I don’t usually write reviews, but I stopped by this new café/lounge to check out their brunch menu, and I’m glad I did. This hidden gem transforms into a lounge in the evenings, but during the day, they serve brunch, and to my surprise, the food was better than many dedicated brunch spots in the Richmond Hill and Markham area. I ordered the Curry Katsu Benny, which was packed with flavor, the Dong Po Rou Benny, where you could really taste the seasoning of the braised pork, and the Strawberry Sando, which was perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. We also had the Spam Breakfast Poutine; while it could have used a touch more salt, it was still very good. I got the HK Milk Tea, which wasn’t watered down, and the Horlicks Latte, which had a nice balance of Horlicks and coffee, though it was a little too sweet for my taste. The bennies came with plenty of hollandaise sauce, with just the right touch of acidity. The staff were friendly, and the atmosphere was relaxed, though the vibe could be cozier for brunch. It still felt like a lounge with the lights on during the day, which might not be for everyone. That said, I also found out they have karaoke nights on Wednesdays, game nights on Thursdays (with a Nintendo Switch projected on big screens for group play), and live DJs on weekends. It was a touch pricey but still gonna recommend this place to my friends!

Sugar Cafe and Lounge — this is what happens when you grow up with immigrant parents but marinate long enough in Western culture to create something entirely your own. A place where tradition and modernity aren’t fighting — they’re slow dancing, cheek to cheek. The menu reads like a mixtape of Asian cult classics — the kind of food that lives deep in muscle memory. Bulgogi fries — salty, sweet, umami-laden perfection, with crispy edges and tender bites of marinated beef. Cheung fun — silky rice rolls that glide down easy, soaked in just the right amount of sauce. It’s comfort food in its truest form — dishes that don’t need to impress because they already know they’re good. And those cups? Straight out of your grandma's dish rack — the kind of chipped, floral-patterned porcelain that somehow makes everything taste better. Nostalgia, served in liquid form. But stick around. As the sun dips, the cafe stretches its limbs, sheds its modest daylight skin, and morphs into a lounge. Cocktails flow, dice roll across tables, and the energy shifts from cozy to electric. A place where you can sip a Soju Yakult Highball with one hand and pound bottles of Tsing Tao. Sugar Cafe and Lounge is where tradition and reinvention sit at the same table.

Food was mediocre. Service was pretty good. Food ratings as follows: Classic Eggs Benedict: 2.5/5 - Eggs were nice and runny but there was way too much sauce. The pairing with Japanese soft bread is a big NO for me - the nature of the bread is just way too soft. With the egg and sauce, everything just became mush. (I’m a bit of an eggs benny fanatic, so many I’m a bit tough… for most people it’s probably acceptable lol) Bulgogi Poutine: 4/5 - Pretty good but only cause it was drenched in a variety of sauces. A good amount of meat and good flavour too. HK Milk Tea: 3.8/5 - Asked for less sweet and was still pretty sweet. Tastes better once the dragon cat melts, as the drink becomes stronger. Dragon cat was cute too :) Iced coffee: 4/5 - a regular good ‘ol cup of joe. Favourite part were the potatoes! Crispy yet soft. Well done on that 👍 Likely will not return. But all the best to the girls here! They’re all really nice and seem like sweet people. Btw it’s a cafe by day and bar by night. Bars aren’t my thing, so likely won’t check it out.

This 4.8 rating they have is a lie

I can’t even give a rating on the service because it was that bad. I had to ask for water by the 10minute mark. Plus the water they handed out in jars were tasting nasty , like it sat there for a LONG LONG TIME. I told them, please give us new water from the tap and not the jars I see on the side already filled. Then, Waited 30mins for my one drink to come out AND 50mins for food to come out. I would ask by 25 min and then every 10 mins when our food would be ready and the server said they are having a rush so they are slow. No sorry. nothing. no comp on anything. I understand a rush but it wasn’t even a rush. At this point u have ppl sitting at all tables bc ur service is slow. When we walked in only 4 -6 tables sat. I kept track of when people were seated and still a good 5-10 minute interval between each new table. There wasn’t a wait time ever to get a seat. This simply is not an excuse with her telling me this, especially when I saw how they were going about. I ordered the iconic bear milk tea & saw the barista/drink girl make JUST ONE & it wasn’t mine. Then another and it still wasn’t mine. Mind you I had already placed my whole order. Like cmon use common service kitchen industry sense. You have 5 tickets all with the same drink. Make it all at once. Like what? And running to the back to get the bear one at a time. Tragic tragic tragic. Also, the food for each guest should all come out at similar times. I saw another table , the only large party, of maybe 8-10 guest — People were done eating before others got theirs. This really soured my experience here. No booster seat for my child. They borrowed one from the restaurant beside but it didn’t even have a strap to tight on the chair or buckle my son up. Even though the Katsu Benedict was delicious, I would never go back again unless they improved their service. The prices are just average (I’m Comparing to downtown pricing. But in that area, would be considered expensive for the amount of food u r getting. The food value compared to service, not worth it. Idec that u r a newer restaurant. That’s why u do a friends and family before grand opening to work out the kinks. I am literally so angered, yes angered and disappointed in my experience that I want to make more reviews on how horrible this...

The service was terrible, we went for the love island watch not many people were there but the atmosphere was nice many games and big projectors what really ruined my experience is how rude one of the servers was. At first we thought she’s being friendly but honestly some of the things she said to us with an smile was so rude. 1) we had to order food through one phone for our table my friends decided to order first since they knew what they wanted right away but I took few minutes and after few minutes with the same phone added my order. Few minutes later the server comes and says next time make sure you’re ordering at the same time just because she got confused what we wanted 2) my friend and her sister got themselves food and wanted to pay separate bill then I so we wanted it to be two bills divided and that’s what we exactly told her. almost at the end of the night when we wanted to pay the server brings out three separated bills thinking my friend and her sister shared food and paying separately we got it confused but since we only ordered wings (that came with fries but we did not know since the picture on their menu did not show) we thought ok so these two bills with the same amount is probably one is for my friend and one for me. Later when I payed the server came and told me she thought my friend and her sister wanted separate bills plus she added $7 more to my bill since I only added garlic to my fries even though the wings already came with fries she charged me $7 more for garlic? Does not make sense but overall she was being rude just because she did not understand our side and personally she’s only a server I have worked in the kitchen before she should learn to at least apologize for the misunderstanding she caused, but instead said to us “well you could have asked/ and there is a picture on the menu too” at least please update the pictures on the menu so we at least know what we are ordering exactly. The server was a girl with average hight she sounds friendly and bubbly but very rude. Thank you and not...
