MARCH 14, 2025: HK BBQ MASTER IS MY REASON FOR EXISTENCE I AM NOTHING WITHOUT HK BBQ MASTER AHHHHHH my expectations coming were THROUGH the roof and i was so expecting to be let down but OH MY GOD somehow my expectations were EXCEEDED this is the best restaurant in canada istg and it’s almost very nearly one of the best in the world im convinced.
i tried all four meats, the bbq pork, the bbq duck, the roasted pork, and the soya chicken and they were honestly all so DELECTABLE that i can’t even pick a favourite.
i requested the fatty bbq pork and they definitely delivered — it was tender, so flavourful and had such a nice sweet flavour that wasn’t sickening.
the roasted pork was super delicious as well, with the skin SUPER crispy and the fat SUPER fatty, and was also quite salty. honestly, even though this is the one i was looking forward to eating the most, i’d say that this is the one i’d leave out just because it didn’t taste as “cohesive” as the other meats.
the soya chicken was SO juicy and not at all dry, the scallion oil on top was actually a perfect complement and it made it taste so good.
the bbq duck i WAS NOT EXPECTING to be so good but omg seriously jawdropping, i feel like im just using the same descriptors but seriously those bites with the pieces of fat and skin and greasiness and mingled together, eaten with the rice was actually heaven on earth.
my favourite part was ordering another bowl of rice which came PIPING hot and enjoying all the meat like that. seriously the most sensational experience.
i feel like with chinese bbq, it’s very easy to get dry meat especially with the duck and chicken and charshiu, but somehow every single bite of meat was so moist and juicy and soft and flavourful, not an ounce of dryness in the entire meal.
the ladies there were also super nice and friendly, and the portions were huge — there was so much meat on my plate.
IN CONCLUSION (because hk bbq master deserves a conclusion) if i lived near richmond i swear i’d be here everyday, and im definitely coming back because this has been one of the highlights of my entire life.
——————————————————————— AUGUST 21, 2025: update update update ! upon returning, i have decided that my favourite is definitely the charsiu (bbq pork), specifically the fatty version. it’s so tender it literally melts in your mouth, and the sticky sweet honey coating is a perfect pairing with...
Read moreBest BBQWhat we have here, ladies and gentlemen, is the world's finest Chinese BBQ shop in all of existence. There are tons of shops in Richmond and Vancouver, and some even have massive line ups to show their worth to the world (for example that one place in Parker Place), but it's this tiny little tucked away place in the parking lot of Superstore (Richmond location) that in my opinion holds the title. pork and roast pork in the lower mainland.
The BBQ pork here is not too lean, not too fat (unless you order it that way), the meat comes apart easily and seasoned perfectly. They're the masters of caramelizing the BBQ sauce and it leaves the surface just a bit crispy while the inside is still flavourful and juicy. The BBQ duck is another good reason to go here, not very gamey, succulent juicy goodness with every bite. Then there's the Roast Pork. The pork is roasted to a golden hue, the skin is crispy, even hours after you buy your little taste of heaven. Underneath the skin, there is a nice layering of fat and lean meat, and while the fat just melts in your mouth, the lean parts aren't dried out and still very moist.
That place in Parker Place (I don't even know the name) always has a line up, but I've tried it and it doesn't compare. Sometimes, they even botch the order and it comes out way too lean and dried out. I've been to HK a couple of times, had they said that the best Chinese food is in China (or HK), but that's not necessarily true. Some of the best chefs have found their way across the Pacific, and into B.B.Q. Master's kitchen. If you want awesome BBQ Pork, Roast Pork, or BBQ Duck, you don't need to go futher...
Read moreDo not trust their opening hours! It says they are open till 8pm, but that's definitely not true. They don't prepare enough meat and they will close early. Called them at 5pm they already sold out of BBQ duck. We got to the restaurant at around 6pm and they only had BBQ pork and the crispy pork left. We had to wait for a table of 4, and while we were waiting the waitress came to tell us they're going to sell out soon. Luckily she asked for our order and reserved the meat rice plate for us so that we wouldn't have come and waited for nothing.
However because she asked for our order early, they already cut the meat and assembled the rice plate before we even got our table. By the time we sat down and started eating, the meat was cold so it wasn't good anymore. On top of that, while we were still eating they started mopping the floor and getting on the counters to wipe the walls. They use lots of cleaning chemicals which is good I guess, but the whole restaurant filled with the scent of cleaner which made the food taste even worse.
The running out of meat early doesn't only affect tourists, it also affects a lot of locals. While we were in the restaurant, at least 30 more people tried to come buy food, but were turned away.
If you really want to come, come at lunch time so that they have everything stocked and aren't rushing to mop and clean even though their official closing time is still 2 hours away. For HK BBQ, they are on the pricey side for rice plates. You can go to the other food courts to get cheaper, similar quality...
