The first thing I noticed is if you are not seen as a respectable customer. A Pilipino and a caucasian woman. We were seated at the first table right next to the entrance, so you could feel the draft as people came into the door and as they walked by our table. They sat a family close by us, but then they were immediately relocated by the head waiter towards the red curtain towards the back of the restaurant. I also noticed, all the asians towards the back of the restaurant , while 2 white couples at one table and two east indian women were seated close by us. And we also sat across where they kept the dirty dish collection cart... which should be kept behind a curtain so I don't have to see it.
We had the geoduck. The waiter doesn't show us the weight of the geoduck. But guesses it is 2lbs. When the bill comes out, it is 2.25. It would be nice to see the weight as you pay per pound. It was made sushi style, which you can get at a sushi restaurant. I asked for the shell, and the waiter brought it out with the body inside. I noticed that the body was not included in the food. He cleaned up the shell and gave it to us, but what happened to the body. It is just like a clam, and you can eat the whole clam. Basically, I just bought the cooks their dinner as I didn't get that piece.
There is English interpretation on the menu so it is easy to read, and there is also photo samples of some of the food available. I asked the price of the crab. 50$ a pound. And the waiter says, the crabs weigh 5 lbs. 250$ it would cost. The oddity of when you see the crab served, the meat is taken out, cooked with garlic, then placed back into the shell. I enjoy eating lobster and crabs and taking them apart and eating the chest cavity. What I don't see is the knuckles... and all that chest meat being served. It is just like ordering a lobster and just getting the tail and claw meat... well... what happened to the chest meat? It is paid for, I want it. Where I am from, I can get 25lbs for the same price. Yes, may be fresh frozen as most people get it. I can buy a 18lb lobster for 150$. Yes, I have to cook it myself, but I have the tools to do it. Didn't order the crab. Couldn't order the live scallop as they were out.
One 750ml bottle of chardonnay wine at 36$, one hot pot 14$, bowl of white rice, and the 2.25lb goeduck came out to $181. The wine glasses are so small, that when you take a sip, the top rim hits my nose. THe final insult came when the waiter asked me if I wanted a doggy bag for the leftover rice noodles. HA! There was not even any meat or vegetable. Really... noodles. That just says.. you are cheap. That is insulting. You are better off ordering it from a sushi restaurant at two pieces. That is all that is needed to experience a geoduck. Yeah tried abalone, but still... best with just a taste instead of the whole animal.
The only way you can compare what is fresh, is to have it cooked the same way as it is frozen. Steam up the whole crab and serve it that way. Then I would really like to find out how much meat I can get out of a crab compared to what they give the customer. The back room has been eating really well. I hope they enjoy the body that I didn't get, because that is their tip. We were still hungry, so we went to Moxies and had a...
Read moreWe came to Sun Sui Wah for dim sum, and it was ok. The ingredients are definitely high quality, but most things tasted a little bland.
Ha Gow (Shrimp Dumplings) - The shrimp dumplings appeared large and plump. The skin wasn't too thick, and had a good chewy texture. It also didn't break when I picked them up, which is always a plus. Inside, the shrimp stuffing was the right texture - firm and smooth, but it lacked seasoning and young bamboo. Without those components, the shrimp wasn't as sweet or flavorful as it should've been.
Siu Mai - Same story here. They're large and visually appealing, but the taste could be better. The stuffing needed more balance. It was mostly ground pork, and I couldn't taste much of the sweet shrimp or earthy, umami packed shiitake. The generous garnish of roe on top was a nice bonus though.
Radish Cakes with XO Sauce - This was one of the better dishes. It had a lot of XO sauce flavor, which is always a good thing. The radish cakes were deep fried and crispy on the outside, but the inside was oddly mushy. Other than that, I thought it was pretty tasty.
Ja Leung (Donut with Rice Noodle Roll) - The donut was good - crispy crust and chewy interior. It may have been slightly dense, but it wasn't much to complain about. The rice noodle roll was kinda thick and mushy, but I like that they separated the sauce from the donut so it could stay crispy.
Sticky Rice (Jun Ju Gai) - This was like a smaller loh mai gai. It had the same issue as the siu mai. The sauce consisted mostly of ground pork, and didn't have the other ingredients to add more flavor. I wish it had some shiitake, dried scallop, and maybe a little Chinese sausage. It didn't taste very interesting without all those other goodies. Kirin definitely makes a much better version of this.
Steamed Tripe with Ginger - I thought this was the best thing we had. The tripe was cooked well and had a fun springy texture without being rubbery or tough. It was seasoned well with ginger, and the white pepper gave it a bright highlight. Doesn't get much better than that.
If I were to come here again for lunch, I would just leave and eat at Max Noodle House (listed as McNoodle House on Yelp). It's not dim sum, but it's the best wonton noodle soup in the Americas and cheaper than...
Read moreThe first time I felt this discriminated in a restaurant. I went with 2 other people. One of us had tattoos and the other was dressed in street style (none of us wore revealing or offensive clothing). First impression: staff didn’t greet us and led us to a table silently. Our server spoke very shortly with us and walked away as we were talking to him, other staff side-eyed our group the ENTIRE meal and whispered about our appearances behind our backs. The server kept interrupting me when I was trying to ask him questions about how to order or what he recommends, since it’s our first time here, and said “pick whatever you want”. Staff rarely came to our table to refill our drinks or checked on us, left a cart of dirty dishes next to our table instead of the many other empty tables next to us. My cousin tried to ask the server a question and order more food and they left mid-sentence after answering very passive aggressively. They rushed us out before even approaching other guests (they said we had to pay before 2:30PM even though we are still eating since the store closes at 3, but I didn’t see any servers approach any other table to make them pay early). Because I was angry at this discrimination and poor service I didn’t pay any tip with the meal. When we were about to leave a waiter comes to our table angrily and says “you are missing something in your payment, you haven’t paid the tip.” He then says “you guys are from out of town?” and before we can even answer that we are from Canada he interrupts and says, “in Canada you always have to pay tip. Always.” Then I tried to explain to him that the service here was horrible and discriminatory, but the only word I could say was “honestly-“ before the server interrupted me AGAIN and said “if you don’t want to pay tip, fine, just leave” and puts down the tip tray in front of me.
Absolutely horrible customer service and the first time I’ve been discriminated against this bad in a restaurant. Would give 0 stars if I could. Non-chinese/non-conservative customers, I would NOT recommend...
